Africa in 2027?

If it’s something you’ve been thinking about, now is a good time to start planning. Sunway Safaris’ 2027 departures are now open, with Early Bird pricing available until 30 June before new rates are released.

We’ve worked with Sunway Safaris for nearly 20 years, and continue to recommend them because their journeys are well-paced, thoughtfully designed, and backed by experienced 100% local crews and guides.

From small group safaris and overland journeys through to lodge-based trips, there’s a wide range of itineraries depending on how you like to travel.

Some 2027 departures are already starting to fill, so planning early gives you the best choice of dates, routes, and availability.

Your first safari is usually a bit different to what you expect, often in the best possible way.

There are the obvious things to prepare for, like cameras and packing lists, but it’s often the smaller things that stay with people afterwards. Early morning game drives, hearing wildlife around camp at night, or suddenly becoming interested in birds.

If you’ve already been on safari, what’s something that surprised you most?

Travel FAQs 💭 How much should I budget for tips on safari?

Tipping is a normal part of life in many parts of Africa, but how much you spend can vary quite a bit depending on the type of journey you’re doing and the activities included along the way.

As a general guide, it’s worth allowing a little extra in your budget for local guides, drivers, accommodation staff, restaurants, and your tour leader or crew.

Ultimately, tipping is completely up to you and should reflect the service you received. To help you budget we provide tour specific guidelines so you know who to tip (and who not to!) and some guidelines on the appropriate minimum and maximum amounts.

One thing to be aware of is that tips are usually given discreetly, often with a handshake or quietly in an envelope, rather than openly or publicly.

From This… To This🐘

A few days can look quite different on the Walking South Africa & eSwatini tour.

Day 6 is spent in the highlands of eSwatini, walking in the quieter, less explored parts of Malalotja Nature Reserve. On day 7, you pass through Mbabane, visiting local craft and medicine markets along the way.

Then the next day, you’re back in South Africa, walking in a private reserve in Zululand, tracking nyala and giraffe along the Msinene River and spending time in Hluhluwe, an important area for rhino conservation.

Same journey, with each day offering something quite different.

A Closer Look 🔎: Kruger National Park

Kruger is one of Africa’s best-known national parks, and for good reason. Located in the northeast of South Africa along the Mozambique border, it covers a massive 2 million hectares (about the size of Slovenia!) with a mix of landscapes, from open savannah through to river systems and denser bush.

This variety supports consistently good wildlife viewing. It is classic safari country and home to the Big 5, as well as huge number of other species both big and small.

It’s a place that works well for both first-time safari travellers and those returning for a different experience.

Take a look in the comments for a selection of Sunway Safaris that visit Kruger National Park.

Tour Spotlight 🔎: Namibia & Zambezi (15 days)

This journey starts at Victoria Falls in Livingstone, with time to experience the falls and optional activities on the Zambezi, before heading west through the Caprivi, a game-rich region known for its wildlife and waterways.

From there, you continue into Etosha National Park, where game viewing is generally very good, particularly around the Etosha Pan, with regular sightings of elephant, antelope and lion.

The route then shifts into Namibia’s more remote areas, including Brandberg and the coastal town of Swakopmund, where you can visit seal colonies or take part in optional activities like sea kayaking or dune boarding.

The journey finishes in the Namib Desert, with time at Sossusvlei to see the towering red sand dunes, before ending in Windhoek.

It’s a well-paced itinerary that suits travellers wanting a mix of wildlife, scenery and a few different experiences along the way.

A sunset cruise on Guma Lagoon in the Okavango Delta.

You’ll often see birdlife moving across the water, hippos surfacing nearby, and elephants along the shoreline, all as the light starts to change.

It’s a slower part of the day, and one people often remember.

Travel FAQs 💭 What should I budget for meals that aren’t included?

While many meals are included in the price of your Sunway Safari there are some that are not. In some places we eat at local restaurants or at lodges that provide an à la carte menu. In general, meals are good value.

So what should you budget? As a guide: Dinner US $15–$25 | Lunch US $6–$20 | Beer ~US $3 | Soft drink ~US $1.50. Credit & debit cards are widely accepted, and ATMs are available in most larger towns.

It’s also recommended to bring a refillable water bottle and use it wherever possible, as tap water quality is generally good.

Maputo National Park in Mozambique has recently been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The park now protects both land and ocean, following the merge of the Maputo Special Reserve and the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve. It’s home to everything from elephants and hippos through to reefs, dolphins and sea turtles.

Ponto do Ouro sits within this coastal section of the park, offering a different way to experience it. Known for its clear water and marine life, it’s where travellers spend time on the beach side of the journey.

On Sunway Safaris’ Mozambique Beach and Bush tour, the focus is here, with time at the coast and opportunities to explore the marine environment alongside the Dolphin Encountours Research Center.
