Freight words that sound made up. They're not.

Dunnage. Stuffing. Devanning. Demurrage. Detention.

The first three are just packing, loading and unloading. The last two are the ones worth knowing, because they turn up on invoices: demurrage when a container sits at the port past its free days, detention when you hang on to the carrier's container too long.

Method Global speaks fluent freight so you don't have to. Swipe through, then go and use "dunnage" in a sentence this weekend.

Selling at Christmas? The stock planning starts now.

Sea freight takes weeks, not days. Then there is customs, then the warehouse, and only then can a single order go out. Every part of that gets busier the closer December gets.

The businesses that have a calm Christmas usually have their stock landed and put away before the rush, not during it. So when the orders come in, they go out on time.

If you are importing for the season, talk to Method Global now, while there is still time to plan it properly.

Ever wondered what a data logger actually does?

On a temperature-sensitive export, a small logger travels with the shipment and records the temperature for the whole journey. If the product has to stay between 15 and 25 degrees, the logger is the proof that it did.

Method Global packs shipments like this out of Christchurch: special temperature-controlled packaging, sealed, monitored with data loggers, then onto the plane.

The temperature control happens in transit. Our warehouses are MPI certified for ambient storage.

The Water Conference at Te Pae had one date, and it was never going to move.

Method Global looked after the freight for it, from months out to the final pick-up:

- One point of contact for international exhibitors and local suppliers
- Customs clearance, watching both sea and air freight
- Free storage, so cargo could arrive early
- Every piece checked against the records, high-value and audiovisual gear catalogued, all of it staged by venue zone
- Two days of bump-in, delivered straight to each booth
- After-hours set-up on the Sunday night, and a 4am Thursday pick-up
- Then everything repacked and sent home, here and overseas

Event freight is logistics with the safety net removed. The part nobody sees is the after-hours work.

Why a light box can cost like a heavy one.

Air freight is charged on the actual weight or the volumetric weight, whichever is bigger. Volumetric weight is the carton's length x width x height in centimetres, divided by 6,000.

So a 60 x 40 x 40 cm carton works out at 16 kg. If it only weighs 5 kg, you still pay for 16.

The fix is usually packaging: the right size box, less empty space, and pallets built to the shape of the load. Method Global works out the chargeable weight with you before anything is booked.

Supplier to doorstep, one team.

Your freight lands and the customs side is handled. Then it goes straight into the racks, gets picked when your customer orders, and is packed, weighed and labelled on the way out the door.

Every one of those steps is a handover. When freight forwarding and the warehouse sit under one roof, there is no gap between them for your stock to fall into, and one team to call when you need an answer.

Method Global runs this across Christchurch, Auckland and Brisbane, for 1,500+ warehouse orders a month.

This w**e is off to Japan, and it can't leave as it is.

Food and drink sold in Japan has to carry a label in Japanese: what it is, where it comes from, how much is in it, what has been added, and who imported it.

So before this shipment goes anywhere, the cartons are opened, every bottle gets its Japanese label, and it is all packed back up ready to go. Method Global's teams in Auckland and Christchurch both do this work for exporters.

It is careful, hands-on work, and it is part of getting an export ready for the market it is heading to.

How much are you paying to ship air?

An assembled wheelbarrow is mostly empty space. Ship it flat instead, and far more fit in every container.

So Method Global assembles them here in the warehouse, as the orders come in. Then each one goes straight out to the customer.

Same product. A smaller freight bill.

If your product ships assembled, it is worth asking whether it has to.

Some freight comes with conditions.

A temperature range it has to stay inside for the whole trip. Coolant or dry ice on an international flight. Labels the destination country insists on. Permits waiting at the other end.

None of that is hard once it is planned. All of it gets expensive when it is not.

Recently Method Global packed a temperature-controlled export that had to stay between 15 and 25 degrees, monitored with data loggers, and labelled a w**e shipment bottle by bottle for Japan.

One thing to be clear on: our warehouses are MPI certified for ambient storage. The temperature control happens in transit, in the packaging and the planning.

This box can't get too cold. Or too hot.

It is a special export shipment, and what is inside has to stay between 15 and 25 degrees the whole way there. So it travels in special temperature-controlled packaging, sealed, and monitored with data loggers.

Temperature-sensitive freight is mostly planning: the right packaging for the journey, the paperwork that goes with it, and a record showing the temperature held.

Method Global sends shipments like this out of Christchurch, alongside 300+ import and export shipments a month across New Zealand and Australia.
