If you don’t notice Nancy Lien’s work when you’re moving through Auckland Airport, then she’s probably hit the mark.

Nancy is our Customer Experience Design Manager, which means she spends a lot of time thinking about things most of us barely register. The position of a sign. Where you’ll plug in your phone. Whether a seat is actually comfortable. Or how the flooring, furniture and graphics all work together.

Making the airport easier to navigate means thinking carefully about what travellers need at each stage of their journey.

“We’re making changes now that people will experience for years to come. There aren’t many opportunities in your career to be part of something on this scale, so I think there’s a real responsibility to get it right. It’s pretty special to drive home knowing you’ve played a small part in what Auckland Airport is becoming.”

And how does someone who spends all day noticing every tiny detail switch off? Nancy smiles.

“Taylor Swift in the car usually does the trick. I’m probably a bit of a Swiftie. By the time I get home, I guess you can say I’ve managed to ‘Shake It Off’.”

✈️ HALFWAY THERE: AKL HITS INFRASTRUCTURE MILESTONE

Our terminal integration programme is now more than halfway delivered, with the new domestic jet terminal on track for completion end of 2029.

Coming later this year, our redesigned Zone C international check-in area will open with 28 self-service kiosks and 15 automatic bag drops. That means less time queueing, more room to get organised and more freedom to check-in at your own pace. Airport and airline teams will be close at hand to help.

You’ll also see more construction, changing routes and temporary arrangements as the work continues. We know this can be frustrating, and we’re focused on helping you know what to expect and keeping you moving as improvements open in stages.

It’s all bringing us closer to a future where domestic jet and international travellers check in under one roof.

🧳 BAG HOTEL? SMARTER BAG HANDLING ON THE WAY 🧳

Behind the scenes at Auckland Airport, work is now underway on 10km of new and upgraded baggage equipment. That’s more than 100 rugby fields in length!

The super smart system will track each bag as it moves through the airport, reducing bottlenecks and making the journey from check-in to aircraft even more reliable.

When it opens at the end of the decade, it will also include a new automated “bag hotel”, with room to safely store 3,000 bags checked in ahead of departure.

The “baggage brain” has just been installed and will ensure bags are individually monitored and directed to the right place and supports our new integrated check-in experience.

☕️ Ever wondered what happens to the coffee grounds after your airport flat white?

Across Auckland Airport, more than 5,000 coffees are served every day. That’s about one every 17 seconds. The used grounds, more than 400kg daily, are now being diverted from landfill and sent for commercial composting.

It’s part of our wider work to reduce waste across the airport, with more than 300 tonnes of compostable material collected from our terminals in the past year and waste to landfill now 22% below our 2019 baseline.

From airport cafés to compost supporting New Zealand growers, it’s a small daily habit that’s finding a useful second life.

Want to bring your sustainability a-game with you when you travel? 💪🌿

Bring a reusable cup or bottle, use the water refill stations in-terminal and choose the right bin to help keep recyclable and compostable materials out of landfill.
