🎉 Building on its earlier successes, year two of our Auckland beautification initiative saw 20 murals installed across the metro network between July 2025 and June 2026.

🌿 Artists Jessie Rukea and Stefan Fuchs (RVST) returned to create another uniquely New Zealand mural for passengers and communities to enjoy. Their concept celebrates the diverse landscapes of Aotearoa, taking viewers from native bush and a dramatic South Island glacier to rolling iron sand dunes and a glow worm-filled cave.

📹 Hear from Stefan as he talks about the concept and the process of working with KiwiRail to create vibrant pockets of artwork within the rail corridor.

🎨 The initiative helps reduce graffiti hotspots by introducing artworks that celebrate local stories and showcase the talent of local artists. We’re stoked to continue this work into a third year, with planning for several sites now underway. Artists interested in working with us on this project, or elsewhere on the national rail network, can email [email protected].

In just 12 days, the City Rail Link (CRL) will transform the way Aucklanders move across the city.

While the CRL tunnels have been constructed, KiwiRail has been working behind the scenes to prepare the wider rail network for the increased frequency and capacity that CRL will deliver.

Since 2018, we have renewed and upgraded infrastructure, redeveloped Henderson and Middlemore Stations, improved network resilience and reliability, and introduced new technology to support a growing rail system, all while continuing to move freight for our customers.

As part of the Government's $2.4 billion investment in Auckland's rail network, KiwiRail has:

• Electrified 19km of track between Papakura and Pukekohe
• Opened Drury and Paerātā Railway Stations in South Auckland, with Ngākōroa expected to open in 2027
• Delivered a new power feed in West Auckland, with construction of a second power feed in South Auckland set to begin later this year
• Added a third main line through one of the busiest sections of the network, separating freight and passenger services
• Renewed and upgraded rail, drainage, sleepers, ballast, and track foundations through the Rail Network Rebuild programme

These investments have laid the foundations for the more frequent, reliable, and resilient rail services that City Rail Link will bring.

🚉 Our Ngākōroa Railway Station site is making great progress, with key milestones being reached every week. Last week, all of the station stairwells were installed, with each structure weighing between 9 and 16 tonnes.

💪 Together with the recent installation of two lift shafts, weighing around 21 tonnes each, it's great to see the station really starting to take shape. Work on the 250-space car park is also moving ahead, with road layers and kerbs currently being installed. We're also making good progress in the wetland area, where approximately 1,200m2 of topsoil and 150 tonnes of riprap rock are being placed.

⚠️ As Ngākōroa remains an active construction site, heavy traffic and large vehicles continue to regularly enter and exit the area. KiwiRail has a Traffic Management Plan in place, including a temporary 50 km/h speed limit in the immediate vicinity.

🤝 Please take care when driving through the area and follow all traffic management signage to help keep everyone safe, including other road users and our construction teams.

A significant milestone for New Zealand's future steel supply chain.

This footage captures the new rail siding at Sims Metal's Otāhuhu facility and the loading of the first container of scrap steel to be moved by rail to New Zealand Steel’s new Electric Arc Furnace at Glenbrook.

This exciting new investment will help create a rail-enabled circular economy, moving recycled steel more efficiently and supporting a lower-emissions future for New Zealand.

We're proud to have delivered the rail siding entirely using KiwiRail's in house expertise, from design and surveying through to construction, and we're looking forward to supporting Sims Metal and New Zealand Steel as operations get underway.

KiwiRail and our City Rail Link (CRL) partners recently celebrated with the West Auckland community the completion of the 20-month Henderson Station Third Platform Project. Delivered by KiwiRail on behalf of City Rail Link Ltd and Auckland Transport, the project has prepared Henderson Station and the Western Line for the more frequent services CRL will bring when it opens on 13 September.

The upgrade included a new third platform and rail line, additional track capacity, staff facilities, and an emergency exit bridge.

Here are some project highlights in numbers:
• 15km+ of new signal cabling
• 4km+ of new drainage infrastructure
• 9 new turnouts enabling trains to switch tracks
• 84 foundation piles installed
• 1,500 native plants established
• 800m³ of concrete poured, enough to cover Eden Park’s grass surface with 11cm of concrete
• 60 tonnes of steel installed, similar in weight to a fully loaded Air New Zealand Boeing 737
• Almost 8,000 square metres of earthworks completed, equivalent to around 1,500 truckloads
• 77% of construction and demolition waste diverted from landfill through recycling and reuse

🏗️ Teams in Palmerston North recently completed an essential upgrade to the Tremaine Avenue/ Kelvin Grove Road vehicle level crossing.

🚧 A Traffic Management Plan (TMP), including a road detour, was scheduled to be in place from Friday night to Monday night, with crews working 24/7 to remove the existing infrastructure and install a new 27-tonne Edilon concrete slab.

🤝 Thanks to great collaboration between KiwiRail staff and Action Civil, the work was completed by Sunday night, avoiding the need for a detour on Monday. The only thing left to be done on the vehicle crossing now is some road marking.

🚙 The upgrade has provided a smoother crossing for the local community and allowed a Temporary Speed Restriction for trains to be removed, improving network reliability.

The last of the First Look events marks another significant milestone for City Rail Link as we prepare to welcome passengers from 13 September.

It was a privilege for KiwiRail to play a part in this important chapter of Auckland's rail history and help showcase a once-in-a-generation project that will transform the way people move around the city.

Aucklanders will soon start to see more signs that opening day is approaching. Across the rail network, crews are updating wayfinding and passenger information signage to prepare for the biggest changes to Auckland's rail network in more than a century.

Saturday's event at Te Waihorotiu Station was the last of three station open days, which collectively welcomed an impressive 43,000 visitors through the new stations.

The 1,000th wagon has rolled out of KiwiRail's Hillside Workshops in Dunedin.

Since assembly began in March 2024, these wagons have been helping move freight across the country, supporting exporters, importers, ports and regional businesses while strengthening the reliability of New Zealand's rail network.

This milestone reflects the dedication of our Hillside team, from engineers and wagon assemblers to planners, logistics specialists, quality teams and support staff. Their work is helping rebuild rail capability and specialist engineering skills right here in New Zealand.

So far, the Government-funded programme has used:
- 16,000 tonnes of steel and materials
- 4,000 wheelsets
- 40,000 bolts
- 60,000 washers
- More than 8,000 quality assurance checks

Congratulations to everyone involved in reaching wagon number 1,000.
