NZ Contractor magazine NZ Contractor magazine launched a page in 2016. The print edition of the mag dates back to 1976. We celebrate 50 years in business in 2026.

NZ Contractor magazine is a monthly magazine published principally as a membership benefit for six industry association groups including Civil Contractors NZ, Aggregate & Quarry, Crane Association of NZ, Heavy Haulage NZ and Ready Mixed Concrete Association. The magazine is available in select retail channels and Koru lounges.

Deep dive into our archives- this time a profile from 2013 of the Caterpillar 933 Traxcavator

Caption: Beautifully restored Cat 933G with chromed exhaust stack and new upholstery. The bucket has been extended a little to increase its capacity, probably to about 1½ cubic yards. Examples of these machines in this condition are very rare.

Caption: An unusual Wabco 111A fitted with a genuine factory cab (minus doors). While available as an option, I have only ever seen one other 111A so equipped. Hydraulic lines from the front-mounted pump to the tank are plainly visible. (Photo: Internet).

Caption: The very cramped confines of a Cat 933G operator’s workplace. There are many levers to negotiate while getting in or out of the machine. From left to right: master clutch, LH brake pedal, gearshift, LH steering clutch, RH steering clutch, forward/reverse lever, RH brake pedal and throttle. Added to this just out of sight to the right are the bucket operating controls.

Deep dive into our archives- this time a profile from 2013 of the Caterpillar 933 Traxcavator

Caption: On a nice day in the English countryside a 933G sits idle during a vintage machinery display. As can be seen this machine is still in use and has had the bucket cutting edge modified and extended, probably for stockpiling work. Other Cat machines in evidence are a D4D and a D2.

Caption: Waikouaiti Council 933G goes about its business in the council’s quarry sometime during the 1960s. It has the standard 1.12 cubic yard GP bucket and an Australian-made Standen three-shank ripper plus full lighting package.

Caption: Taken somewhere in the North Island during the 1960s, this 933G is feeding a grizzly with clay to separate the rocks. Close proximity of the external valve bank near the operator’s right elbow made things quite warm in summer!
