🚧 Safety Week 2026: 25–29 May 🚧

Week is here, and it’s jam packed with activities focused on further strengthening our safety culture. We've got competitions, events and pop up stalls, and prizes for our people all aimed at increasing engagement and understanding.

This year marks the launch of our new role specific Life Savers. The refresh was co‑designed across 18 months by our operational teams to best reflect the risks and work our people do.

Today, the team were inspired by Troy Hall’s story of resilience, tenacity and growth in the wake of a major workplace safety incident.

Thanks to all of our people who have been involved in developing our Life Savers!

Yesterday we put our exec and senior lead team through their paces on , splitting them into five groups across ops from engineering, control through to rail and lashing. 🦺

The team did the work, interviewed team-members and conducted critical control verifications. To finish, the teams came back together and presented the key lessons and takeaways. 📖

This day was all about getting out in ops and experiencing different areas of the port to understand what our hard-working teams are up against 24/7. 💪

Inspiring the next generation through our partnership with Spirit of Adventure ⛵

This , we’re proud to continue our partnership with Spirit of Adventure. In exchange for free berthage services we are afforded two 10-day voyages for teenage kids of our port whanau.

Matthew Kirk, a recent voyager and son of Alistair Kirk (GM Infrastructure) said “I would like to thank Port of Auckland for sponsoring me on the 10-day Spirit of Adventure voyage. I really enjoyed the whole experience and I’m very grateful for the opportunity. Having to step up, give clear instructions, and work as part of a team in those moments really pushed me and improved my communication and leadership. I’m actually thinking of applying to be a leading hand in the future onboard the spirit. Overall, it was such a cool experience that I’ll remember for a long time, and I’m really thankful for your support in making it happen as I’m not sure I would’ve done it otherwise.”

These opportunities give our rangatahi the chance to build confidence, develop leadership skills, form lasting friendships in a unique and rewarding environment.

We’re stoked to release the name of our new pilot vessel today. She’ll be named – Te Ihu (Te-E-Who) — meaning the bow, the nose, the point of first contact. 🍾

Entrusted to the port by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei the name recognises both the vessel’s crucial role in ensuring safe navigation on the Waitematā, and the enduring contribution of long‑serving harbour pilot boat Master, Murray McGehan. ⚓

Murray’s career has spanned an incredible 50 years at the port. Starting in the Engineers Maintenance department as a carpenter and then moving to the boat shop to become a shipwright until 1989, then moving into Marine and finally as a skipper on the pilot boats. 🌟
