25th April 2015 – the first major earthquake in Nepal since 1934. Welcome to our EarthKind Cottages!!

Earth Kind Cottage is brand new and fresh concept in providing exceptionally unique, comfortable, home life yet cheap accommodation in Kathmandu, the capital of Himalayan country Nepal . Instead of regular kind of complex structure found in urban region; we preserve the flavor of country side traditional houses found in Nepal using eco friendly materials like wood, bamboo and galvanized steel; y

et we have furnished with a modern touch for royal stay of our guests. The guests of Langtang Ri Trekking in Kathmandu needed a safe place - many buildings in the city were damaged and dangerous with aftershocks likely. Thankfully some empty space was available very close to the city only 4Km northwest of Thamel. Trekking tents were fixed and the clients spent the remainder of their time feeling safe in this place before their return home. After a second major quake on 12th May the team at Langtang Ri realised that an earthquake resistant place to stay would be an essential offer to our clients. Investigation showed us that small, one storey buildings with the structure made from bamboo would deliver this kind of safe accommodation. In Nepal bamboo is locally grown, very environmentally friendly, and more importantly, when used in building, it bends and flexes with any movement of the earth. The conventional design of modern ‘quake proof ‘ buildings, using steel rods inside concrete, despite their strength, will still sometimes break under the stress of a quake. Stable foundations of concrete with bamboo framework became the seed of the idea for our special place to stay. Further research showed us that clients are often looking for accommodation that is in tune with making the most of natural resources – materials locally sourced, low impact, and hand-made where possible – and with an atmosphere to enjoy the natural environment with our wonderful Nepali flowers, fruits and vegetables. We have five individual cottages designed with safety, comfort and convenience in mind including:

• Open space with beautiful gardens
• Solar hot water
• Welcome basket of seasonal fruits
• Traditional building and decoration materials sourced in Nepal
• Bicycles available for access to Kathmandu and local area
• Motor car pick up always available from the airport and trekking destinations
