Havarikommisjonens rapport av ulykke med høyhastighetsbåt. Feil ved stabilitets prøve er en del av årsaken.

En kombinasjon av høy hastighet inn i sving og fartsreduksjon som medførte en spinout og en påfølgende kantring, var hovedårsaken til hendelsen med fritidsbåten Malmhella. Kantringen ville sannsynligvis ikke inntruffet om fartøyet hadde hatt gode stabilitetsegenskaper.

One of the most critical points in the structure of a sailing yacht is the connection between the keel and the hull. This connection needs to be specially reinforced due to different reasons:

🔸First, the keel carries the ballast, which constitutes a significant amount of the total displacement of the hull. Due to so, the connection with the hull has to withstand the weight of the ballast in the worst possible conditions without structural failure.

🔸Second, the keel is a hydrodynamic appendage that protrudes from the hull in the vertical direction. This causes the keel to be subject to impacts creating important loads at the connection.

🔸The connection is also subject to hydrodynamic loads, but those will usually be less important than the ones mentioned above, at least in the context of commercial leisure boats.

A common configuration used for connecting the keel and hull in modern sailing yachts is to bolt the keel to the hull. As the distance between the bolts is much shorter than the span of the keel, the forces acting on the bolts (and, therefore, the loads they must withstand) are important. These forces on the bolts are then transmitted to the hull's structure through its bottom, which is usually reinforced with thicker structural elements than in other hull zones, and sometimes also with extra floors and/or girders.

ISO 12215 is an international standard that focuses on the scantling of recreational and commercial craft and workboats up to 24 meters long, and it is required to obtain the CE certificate. Its part 9, i.e., ISO 12215-9, establishes a procedure to calculate the scantling of the elements involved in the connection keel-hull.

While the Norm considers the evaluation of several load cases, the two most important are:
🔸fixed keel at 90 degrees knockdown (load case 1)
🔸longitudinal impact (load case 4).
