Starmoen is Norway’s national centre for gliding and hosts many of the country’s major competitions, including this SGP qualifier organised by the national gliding organisation itself.
With only around 700 glider pilots in Norway, the community is close-knit, and when Starmoen hosts, the whole country shows up. Established in 1976 after a major forest fire, the first airfield was built by Elverum Flying Club, while the Norwegian Air Sports Federation has overseen its development since 1983. That same year, the Ole Reistad Centre was established, and the airfield gradually developed into today’s national gliding hub, now home to both Elverum and Gardermoen Gliding Clubs.
Norway has run Grand Prix-style events since 2006, but this is only their second SGP qualifier, making Starmoen and its spectacular surroundings one to watch.
