Looking for a French island escape without the Côte d’Azur price tag? 🇫🇷

🌊 Île de Ré might just be my favourite budget-friendly destination in France.

🚲 With more than 100km of cycle paths, gorgeous sandy beaches, charming harbour villages, salt marshes, fresh seafood and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to slow down and explore at your own pace.

🦪 One of my favourite money-saving tips is to skip the luxury hotels and book an Airbnb in a quieter village like Sainte-Marie-de-Ré. Shop at the local markets, tuck in at the oyster shacks, and make the most of the island’s fantastic free attractions, including beaches, museums, nature reserves and the iconic Phare des Baleines lighthouse.

💶 Want to save even more? Visit outside July and August. Accommodation is cheaper, the bridge toll is lower, and you’ll enjoy quieter beaches, peaceful cycling routes and a much more authentic experience.

📍Have you been to Île de Ré, or is it on your France bucket list?

Looking for affordable lunch in La Rochelle? 🐟

🦪 Skip the tourist traps and grab a table at Le P’tit Bleu on the Vieux Port, where fresh fish, oysters and grilled seafood are served right by the harbour.

🍺 One of the best things about this spot is the location. Sit outside overlooking the water, order a cold local beer or a glass of Charente wine, and enjoy seafood that has travelled a lot fewer miles than you have.

⚓ Expect a relaxed atmosphere, simple cooking and surprisingly reasonable prices for such a prime waterfront setting. It’s the sort of place that proves you don’t need a huge budget to enjoy great food in one of France’s most beautiful coastal cities.

🦐 If you’re visiting La Rochelle on a road trip, city break or French coast adventure, this is an easy lunch stop that combines fresh seafood, harbour views and good value in one place.

Planning a Loire Valley trip? 🏰

Stay in Orléans instead of one of the expensive château towns!🍷

🚆 This beautiful city is just over an hour from Paris by train and makes a fantastic base for exploring some of the Loire Valley’s most famous castles using public transport.

🇫🇷 From Orléans you can easily visit Château de Sully-sur-Loire, Château de Meung-sur-Loire, Château de Chambord and even the spectacular Château de Chenonceau, all while benefiting from cheaper accommodation and dining prices.

🚶‍♀️When you’re not castle hopping, spend your time exploring the historic centre, admiring Sainte-Croix Cathedral, learning about Joan of Arc and enjoying walks along the Loire River.

💰 If you’re looking for an affordable way to experience the Loire Valley’s castles, history and food, Orléans might just be the smartest base in the region.

Looking for a French city break that won’t empty your wallet? 🇫🇷
Orléans might be one of the most underrated destinations in France!

🚊 Just an hour from Paris by train, it offers historic streets, beautiful architecture and authentic French atmosphere without the capital’s hefty price tag.

⛪ Wander through the charming old town, visit Sainte-Croix Cathedral and discover the story of Joan of Arc, who played a pivotal role in the city’s history. It’s packed with culture, yet feels far more relaxed than many of France’s better-known city destinations.

🚶‍♀️ One of my favourite things about Orléans was the Loire River. Expect scenic riverside walks, cycling routes, pétanque pitches, picnic spots and gorgeous views along France’s longest river. It’s the perfect place to slow down and enjoy local life.

🍷 Orléans also sits on the doorstep of the Loire Valley, making it a fantastic base for wine lovers. Think local vineyards, excellent regional wines and leisurely lunches that cost far less than you’d expect in Paris.

💰 If you’re searching for an affordable France city break with history, food, wine and beautiful riverside scenery, Orléans deserves a spot on your travel list.

Rouen is one of the easiest and prettiest cities to visit in Northern France… here’s how to enjoy it for less 🇫🇷

⛪ You can explore some of Rouen’s biggest attractions completely free, including the magnificent Rouen Cathedral, the medieval Gros Horloge and Place du Vieux Marché, famous as the site where Joan of Arc was executed in 1431.

🕰️ The Gros Horloge is one of the oldest astronomical clocks in France and sits above a beautiful pedestrian street lined with half-timbered buildings, cafés and independent shops.

🧀 For lunch, skip the tourist restaurants and head to the covered market beside the Church of Saint Joan of Arc, where you can pick up local Normandy cheeses, fresh bread and other regional treats.

🧺 Take your picnic down to the banks of the Seine and enjoy one of the best budget lunches in Rouen with views across the river.

🚗 We parked at Opéra Rouen Parking, which is centrally located and worked brilliantly for our car with a roof box, making sightseeing easy and stress-free.

💰 With free attractions, affordable parking and a market lunch, Rouen is proof that a memorable France city break doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

Want to eat incredible food in France without blowing your travel budget? 🍽️

💰Skip the tourist menus and look for the plat du jour instead. This is one of the best France travel hacks for finding authentic French food at local prices.

🥖 Served mostly at lunchtime between 12pm and 2pm, a plat du jour is the daily set menu offered by local cafés, brasseries and roadside restaurants across France. You’ll often get 2 or 3 courses for around 12€ to 20€, sometimes including bread, wine or coffee too.

🧀 Think cordon bleu, moules marinières, homemade quiche or amazing salads… proper French dishes locals actually eat, not overpriced tourist food near major landmarks.

🚗 My top tip? Look for handwritten chalkboards outside restaurants saying ‘formule midi’ or ‘plat du jour’ and walk at least a few streets away from the main squares. Some of my best budget meals in France have been in tiny village cafés packed with locals.

💶 Honestly, it’s one of the easiest ways to experience authentic French cuisine on a budget and still eat really well.

Planning a France trip? Don’t make the rookie mistake of arriving in town at 1pm expecting everything to be open…🥐

🇫🇷 In many French towns and smaller cities, shops, museums, pharmacies and even churches still close between 12 and 2 for a proper lunch break.

😅 At first I found it wildly inconvenient.
Now? Honestly, I kind of respect it.

🍷 Long lunches, proper meals, slower afternoons and significantly fewer sad sandwiches eaten over a laptop. The French lifestyle might actually be winning.

👌 My top tip?
Use lunchtime to eat slowly at a local café, wander the streets or enjoy a carafe of wine in the sunshine… then do your sightseeing afterwards when places reopen.

😂 It’s one of those little France travel tips nobody tells you until you’re standing outside a locked church door wondering what happened.
