🎁 WIN! 110 years of Schiphol means plenty of stories to look back on ✈️ This week, we’re travelling back to 1949!

That’s when Schiphol’s fourth air traffic control tower opened at what we now know as Schiphol-Oost. Air traffic controllers worked here for 18 years, until the new terminal at Schiphol-Centrum opened in 1967.

Workers and travellers weren’t the only ones coming to Schiphol though. In 1955, the airport welcomed more than one million visitors, who paid an entrance fee to visit the airport 👀

The tower almost didn’t make it to the present day. In 1998, several companies at Schiphol-Oost joined forces to save it from demolition and raised enough money to move it 30 metres. Today, it’s still standing, and even houses a restaurant!

But there’s more… 👀 To celebrate our 110th birthday, we’re giving you and three others the chance to visit the old tower during Open Monumentendag on 12 September.

As we get closer to our 110th birthday, we’re looking back at how Schiphol has changed over the years 🎂✈️

This week, we’re stepping inside the airport.

In 1928, Schiphol opened its first central terminal building, just in time for the Olympic Games in Amsterdam. Travellers bought their tickets at the counter and checked their flight times on a large chalkboard, updated by hand.

But even back then, there was more to Schiphol than catching a flight. Travellers and visitors could stop for something to eat or drink, and over the decades, shops, restaurants and lounges became an increasingly bigger part of the airport.

The way travellers found their flight changed too; from handwritten chalkboards to Schiphol’s iconic split-flap departure board and eventually to the digital screens we know today.
