Good aircraft design takes time, a lot of time!

The concept design phase of a new aircraft determines the aircraft's mission requirements based on market research. It's the single most crucial phase to turn design into product that ties customers and markets together. Here, user requirements are defined and transformed into initial design sketches, which also determine the placement of main components. These designs must meet operational requirements and take into account aerodynamics, propulsion, structure, ergonomics and control systems. The final concept design includes all major components and is optimised in the preliminary design phase. Here, adjustments can still be made and calculations, such as flow and structural analyses, are carried out. Wind tunnel tests can help in further optimisation. Certification is an important guide throughout the design process. In the detailed design phase, production specifications are finalised, such as the wing structure and lift components. All components are tested for strength and functionality, including test flights. During this phase, collaboration with customers and the official launch can take place to obtain industrial support.

Fly me to the Moon

Few industries face greater obstacles when it comes to investments and financing than General Aviation. In order to become successful, it does not help to just fluff your feathers to look better. Marketing alone is certainly not enough to reach the finish line, even if it seems to lead to apparent successes in the short term. It is more about good and thorough preparation. That starts with market research into (end) users, (local) markets and revenue models. When these have been properly mapped out, the preliminary design phase can begin to translate the requirements and wishes that apply here into a product. That process can take years. Those who have that time, or take it, will be better prepared in the long term. Now that that moment has arrived, we can turn this page and get started.

Major refurbishment for our aircraft trailer. A minor transport damage prompted us to go a bit wider. The paintwork in particular deserved attention and got that with the original company colours. The wiring and part of the lighting fixtures were also addressed. The whole thing is now extra presentable for the open day on July 6th at at the hangar.

We merken, dat sinds Cormorant SEAplanes naar E-Deck is verhuist, nu al aan de reacties dat daarmee iets groter in gang is gezet. Het voelt dan ook erg goed als we de hangar op NV Luchthaven Teuge in lopen om bezoekers rond te leiden. Met dit mooie artikel van Niek Megens in DeStentor krijgt het project eveneens nog meer lucht onder haar vleugels!

How to design and build a classic airframe?

With some regularity, we get questions about the design of the Cormorant and the wooden airframe designed for it. In principle, this differs little to nothing from a classic aircraft, which is also constructed from trusses, longerons, stringers and keel beam. The main difference concerns the materials used wood versus aluminium or composites. That wood is no weaker or heavier than classical materials proves both the strength and weight of the mock-up. At our request, Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen carried out research into the strength of the frame, which proved to be perfectly adequate as a test bed for ground and water tests. This therefore prompted us to finish the aircraft in Scotland and carry out the necessary tests there. Moreover, it provides great pictures for our marketing.
