Some encounters on Skye are impossible to plan.
I met this magnificent Highland cow near Sconser, quietly standing in the landscape as if posing for the camera was all part of the day.

That calm stare, the windswept coat and the unmistakable character of the Highlands — exactly the kind of moment I love finding in Scotland.

Golden Gaze of the Highlands

There’s something about the way a Highland cow looks at you — calm, curious, and completely unimpressed by the person pointing a camera at it.

I photographed this beautiful Highlander in Applecross, on the west coast of Scotland, during the golden hour. The warm evening light filtering through the trees gave the whole scene that wonderful golden glow — and for a moment, everything simply came together: the light, the setting and, most importantly, that gaze.

I’ve recently added this photograph to the Pearls of Scotland Fine Art collection, where it is available as a framed 50 × 70 cm (approx. 20 × 28 in) Fine Art Print.
