September is one of my favorite months to travel 🍂 it’s the transition month between summer and fall in Europe and the Americas, making it one of those great pockets of time to go.

I’ve rounded up the boutique hotels that I have my eye on this month, and let me tell you this round-up has something for a range of travelers. There’s a w**e estate in Portugal that screams being made for a multigenerational group. A townhouse hotel in London’s SoHo that would be perfect for a girls’ trip, and an adults-only stay in Crete worth considering and that I’m convinced will show you there’s more to the Greek islands than what you see on social media.

If you want to know what to look for in a hotel when you’re traveling with kids then you need to buckle in for this reel.

Guys - just because a hotel says it’s family friendly does not mean it will work for all ages. Read that again.

Your toddler needs different things from a hotel than your elementary aged kid, and they need different things than a teenager. If you’re looking for JUST family friendly then you my friend are just barely touching the surface.

But guess what a Google search won’t tell you? It won’t tell you that there are 15 steps to get in and you’re going to be struggling to get that stroller up. It also won’t tell you that your teen isn’t going to have a cool rooftop view to send to their friends.

The number one reason I tell people they need to take their kids internationally is this :

School cannot teach them empathy and teach them to truly understand what other cultures are like. They can’t read these in a book (and I read a lot of books so I feel like I would know).

School cannot show your kids that to-go cups of coffee just aren’t a thing in Italy, but that meals themselves there are meant to be enjoyed at a slower pace. It can’t show them how a hotel in Arenal, Costa Rica opened up a wildlife sanctuary on site to help care for wildlife that were being held illegally as pets.

School can teach our kids TONS of stuff but some things they need to be out in the world to experience, and see to learn. To me, empathy and how other cultures live and operate on a daily basis is one of them.

I know it seems scary but I promise it’s not. If it’s feeling all too overwhelming right now but you know you want to do it - then I’m so glad you’re here friend 🤎

Let’s chat girls trips friends. How many of you also well-intentionally say “let’s do it!” And then 15 text messages later when you’ve realized one person is actually going to have to plan it, coordinate the schedules, and you’re all going to have to take the time off it just stops. Maybe it’s mom guilt, maybe it’s dog mom guilt (also boarding costs 😮‍💨). Either way it doesn’t happen.

Cue 4 months later over a bottle of w**e as you’re scrolling during your one meet up you have every 4 months and say “why didn’t we do that?” Well friend it’s called time. But also because we feel guilty prioritizing filling our cup (and if you don’t then hats off to you friend! ❤️)

I think you need to prioritize that girls trip in 2027. I think you need to find that one friend (because you don’t need 15 people for a trip, just one other friend counts). Pick some dates, or a general time frame. Then - DM me.

It’s so easy to forget that we have lives beyond vet appointments, sports schedules, school volunteering, working and relationships. But, if you can give yourself one weekend a year with just one other close friend - you’ll find you have a tradition worth its weight in gold.

I love public transportation - huge advocate for it. You know when I don’t love it? The day I get off a plane. Specifically getting off an international flight where (let’s be honest) from RDU having at least 1 layover.

What I do love? Having someone literally waiting for me at baggage claim, taking my bags for me and walking me to a car to take me to my hotel. It’s the epitome of chefs kiss to me 👏

If you TRULY want that one thing that makes your travel day easier, it’s having your driver scheduled. We’re not talking about a limo here, but we are talking about a safe car, with a vetted driver, who has a car seat for your kids already in the back seat, or will make sure there’s a cooler stocked with drinks in it for you and your friends.

That’s the biggest “hack” you can do on your travel day. I work with a limited number of clients so if you want to work with me for your holiday trip or a trip in 2027 then let’s chat soon 🫶

Welcome to Travel Thoughts (specifically during carpool line) 😅

I work with a lot of families on international travel and a big concern I get is “but do you think it’s okay to fly with my kid, what if they don’t do well?”. This is valid I promise you - but also, it’s okay. And if you don’t have someone telling you this then I’m going to - it’s okay.

Your infant may cry during your flight no matter how much we prep you, and that’s okay. It shouldn’t be the reason you don’t take the trip, and I’m going to encourage you to stop thinking it’s a burden to other people because it’s not 🫶

Food is one of my personal favorite ways to experience a country or a new city, and it's consistently something I recommend you do! There's something about learning how to cook something, or combining your tour with food, that just makes it feel that much more like you've actually visited.

Here are a few food experiences from recent trips that I loved having a hand in👇
-making empanadas in Costa Rica with a group of 7 (dietary restrictions and all)
-a cooking class inside a local's home in Mexico City
-a food tour through Split that was part walking tour part dinner
-pasta rolling in Florence with their 5 year old having the best time

If you're planning a trip and want one experience that's almost guaranteed to be a highlight, then you've got to add this to your list! Make sure to save this for your next trip!

If you’re wondering where the summer went and just realized you really don’t want to do the exact same thing for fall break that you’ve done for the last 3 years, then friend let me tell you, you’re not alone. A lot of families get to trip four or five and start wondering what else is out there, they just don’t know how to make it work when you’ve got a toddler, a tween, and grandparents all traveling together.

That’s the part I handle. The right guide, the right pace, the right balance of “wow” moments and downtime so nobody’s melting down by day three (kids or adults because let’s be honest adults get hangry too).

Fall break is closer than it feels. And if you’re already eyeing the holidays, a trip is still one of the best gifts you can hand your family because nobody unwraps a sweater and says “I’ll remember this forever” no matter how many hours you spent searching for it.
