Before you drive
• Check the weather & KNMI warnings: Look for code geel/oranje for icy roads.
• Clear all windows and mirrors completely – driving with limited visibility is fined in NL.
• Use winter tyres if possible. They’re not mandatory in the Netherlands, but they make a big difference.
• Fill washer fluid with antifreeze – road salt creates dirty spray fast.
• Plan extra time so you’re not tempted to rush.

While driving on ice

Go slow and smooth
• Reduce speed significantly – grip is far lower than it looks.
• Accelerate, brake, and steer gently. Sudden inputs cause skidding.
• Shift up early (lower RPM) to reduce wheel spin.

Increase distance
• Keep at least 4–5× normal following distance.
• Start braking much earlier than usual.

Braking tips
• ABS: Brake firmly and let the system work—don’t pump.
• No ABS: Brake gently and release if wheels lock.
• Use engine braking by easing off the accelerator instead of braking sharply.

Steering & skids
• If the car skids:
• Stay calm
• Ease off pedals
• Steer gently in the direction you want the car to go
• Avoid sudden lane changes.
