Another happy customer in the mailbox, with a picture! Don't they look cute together? 🥰

This faithful Metrum customer recently placed the new I2S-LVDS module in his Amethyst. Of course, this Amethyst has DAC3 on board, and with the addition of a CD transport that outputs I2S via an HDMI cable, the combination really shines.

We regularly get questions about what I2S is, how to set the jumpers, and how I2S outperforms SPDIF. Our April 2025 newsletter gives an in-depth explanation of the differences. The product pages of the I2S-LVDS modules show the proper jumper placement. With a direct I2S connection, the digital data is not converted to SPDIF, and back to I2S again in the DAC, while the clocking stays in the transport. If that clocking is done right, you'll be rewarded with a wider image and better spatial resolution.

The I2S module comes in place of the USB module, so you have to choose between USB and I2S. Sometimes, taking the Red pill is preferred over taking the Blue pill. All we can say now is, I2S rocks and if you haven't yet, you should definitely try it out!

Hooray! We're back online with a new website design. The website is currently under construction, so pages will be added and edited. The newsletters will also be added shortly.

The previous PHP-based website used a theme which appeared to be susceptible to attacks. After more than 8000 attempts, a hacker got the best of it and was evicted shortly after. A full report of the attack can be found on https://metrumacoustics.com/blog/20260218-incident. We see the attack as an opportunity to advance migration to the Rust platform. The new Metrum Acoustics website is more secure and lighter, so it loads faster. Win-win!

Ordering procedure:
Since the online web-shop is not fully operational yet, send an email with the device(s) you would like to order, accompanied by your personal details. We will send you an invoice (this is also your order confirmation) and a Mollie payment link. With this link you can pay using credit card, PayPal and direct bank transfer. Our shipping system is fully functional.

Have a good weekend!

Dear Audiophiles and Music lovers,

Last night, the Metrum website was the subject of a hacking attempt. We feel obliged to inform you about this attack as we take the privacy of our customers very seriously. We voluntarily took our website down to repair the affected part. The perpetrator was only able to see one page, and was then removed. Details that were unwillingly shared with an unknown party are: last name, order number, amount of order and order status (paid/shipped/received). No address data was stolen, and your privacy is safe. All orders that arrived before February 18th are unaffected and will be processed as normal. Dealer orders were unaffected, as they are processed differently. Our IT department is working on the matter, and we will be back online shortly. A full report on the incident will be published when we're back online. Online ordering will be available after repairs are finished.

Ordering procedure:

Please send an email to [email protected] regarding your order. You will be given an order number and a request for name, address, zip code, etc. You will receive an order confirmation with a Mollie payment link (pay using a direct bank transfer, PayPal or credit card). After payment is received, we will send your tracking code and ship your order. Our shipping system is fully operational: only online ordering is affected, so we can ship out orders as usual.

Luckily, our hardware is not as dated as in the picture, and there was no smoke or fire to be seen. Thank you for your understanding. We're happy to help where needed. You can reach us at [email protected] for questions.

We'll talk soon!

Tube amps, love them or hate them, but they have earned a place in Audiophile circles. Some like the nostalgic glow, others revel in their delicate rendition of their favorite musical piece. Tubes have the advantage of their electrons flowing through a vacuum, so there are no temperature-induced effects on the signal. Interesting to switch back and forth, listen to the differences between tubes and transistors, this cable versus that cable...

Tubes also have other specific properties. They usually consume more power, need a heat-up time before settling and wear out faster than our trusty transistors. Moreover, they usually run on high voltage. Not a problem, as long as that high voltage doesn't reach the outside of the cabinet or the outputs.

Well... in specific cases, a high voltage can reach the input connectors of a tube amp, as most tube designs have capacitors in series with their input signal line. A lesser-known fact is that these capacitors can charge to a high voltage. Then, if an interlink is changed out while the equipment is still on, the stored charge is dumped into the output of the DAC. A voltage spike back into the output from emptying high voltage capacitors can cause the DAC to fail. The result is silence and a costly repair.

Our sound advice (pun intended) is to always turn equipment off before switching out connectors, sources, amplifiers, etc. That also holds for transistor designs, by the way! This way, voltages are allowed to climb gradually, and static electricity also doesn't have a chance of damaging equipment. Pops or crackles from connectors that are plugged in or out are also prevented, keeping your speakers happy 🎵

In our inbox we received a picture from a happy customer that placed his DAC3 upgrade himself. Guess he was re-listening all his Music because the text in his accompanying email was brief: "Got the chips and done with the upgrade, everything looks good. Sound is amazing. Thank you so much for the help."

Going by the upwards position of his thumb he is satisfied with what he's hearing 😉🎵

If you're considering to upgrade to DAC3, please check if your Metrum DAC is compatible and how many modules you need. An explanation is given on the product page: https://metrumacoustics.com/modules/86-metrum-acoustics-dac3-modules.html

Placing your DAC3 upgrade is easy: with every DAC3 upgrade we send instructions for placement.

Make sure you unplug all cords (especially power) from your DAC. Then remove the top screws from the back and the screws on the sides (Adagio and Pavane don't have side screws). Touch and hold the metal can of the power inlet to prevent static electricity. Carefully whiggle out the Transient DAC modules and replace them with the DAC3 modules. The position of the dot on the module must match the position of the dot on the circuit board. Also, please make sure that all legs of the module are in their respective sockets. Close the lid, screw the back screws in first. Then the side screws. Re-connect your DAC and enjoy!

The increase in resolution is immediately there. After a burn-in period the Bass will calm down, while detail increases even more.

A factsheet with measurements on DAC3 is also available on our website: https://metrumacoustics.com//index.php?controller=attachment&id_attachment=23

Have a nice weekend and wish you happy listening!

A solution for powering the new I2S-LVDS input modules for Jade, Onyx and The Amethyst boards without a 4-pin power connector under the module is now available.

Metrum DAC owners that have a Jade, Onyx or Amethyst that would like to order the new I2S-LVDS module are requested to check which version of motherboard they have before ordering. If you have a motherboard without power connector (second picture, yellow square), please notify us via email or in the message field with your order. We will then ship the I2S-LVDS module with an attached power connector to your doorstep.

Note that the 4-pin power connector (or extra power connector) is NOT needed for Metrum Pavane and Adagio DAC models. This also applies for the Sonnet Digital Audio DACs, as they have a different design.

Short snippet from the Metrum Acoustics workshop: this time we had a lovely couple over for the change of a module. Mr and Mrs are both into Music and are now enjoying the resolution of I2S over LVDS. Obviously, we always verify the proper working after placement of a module 🤓

We worked on bringing a solution for the Jade and Onyx boards without the 4-pin power connector: adding a small power connector to plug into the motherboard for your convenience. No more in-factory modification needed. We will explain more in our next post, including pictures (of course).
