Day 2 focused on a Working Group Meeting coordinated by SON and SRADeV Nigeria, bringing together engineers and technical experts from key government institutions, United Nations Industrial Development Organization, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, United Nations Environment Programme United for Efficiency (U4E) consultants, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria and the Nigerian Society of Engineers under the leadership of the Working Group Chairman.

During the session, the draft MEPS for electric motors was rigorously reviewed. Members provided expert insights grounded in industry experience, market dynamics and current trends in Nigeria, leading to consensus recommendations on MEPS for both 3-phase and single-phase motors. These recommendations will be forwarded to the Technical Committee for consideration.

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), in collaboration with SRADeV Nigeria on behalf of CLASP, successfully convened a 2-day workshop on Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for electric motors in Nigeria, held from 15-16 April 2026 at Ibis Hotel Ikeja, Lagos.

Day 1 featured an Inception Workshop, where stakeholders reviewed the Market Assessment Report on Industrial Motors in Nigeria.

The sessions enabled collaboration, technical input and alignment towards the development of MEPS for electric motors in Nigeria laying the groundwork for informed policy decisions.

This engagement reflects a strong commitment to advancing energy efficiency, reducing emissions, and supporting sustainable industrial growth in Nigeria.

🌍 INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ZERO WASTE 2026 ♻️
Theme: Food Waste 🍲

A large portion of the waste we generate every day is food waste, yet much of it could be avoided, reused, or turned into something valuable.

When food waste is dumped in landfills, it produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change and harms our health.

But the good news is:
👉 We can all be part of the solution.

Here’s how you can take action today:
🥗 Plan your meals and avoid overbuying
🍱 Store food properly to extend freshness
🍽️ Share or donate excess food
🌱 Compost your food waste instead of dumping it

Reducing food waste is one of the simplest ways to protect our environment, improve public health, and fight climate change.

Let’s rethink how we produce, consume, and dispose of food.

DAY 7 – Make Smart Choices

How we manage waste today will determine the future of our climate.

From methane emissions in dumpsites to plastic pollution in our environment, poor waste practices are accelerating climate change.

This means:
🌡️ Rising temperatures
🌪️ More extreme weather events
💧 Increased flooding and environmental damage

But here’s the truth:
👉 Better waste management is climate action.

Every action counts:
♻️ Segregate your waste at source
🌱 Compost organic waste
🚫 Reduce your use of single-use plastics
🔁 Reuse and refill whenever possible

The choices we make daily can either harm or protect our planet.

As we mark the International Day of Zero Waste, let’s move from awareness to action.

DAY 6 – Protect the environment. Protect your health. 💪

Waste doesn’t just harm the environment. It affects your health.

Methane emissions from dumpsites contribute to air pollution and climate change, leading to:
🫁 Respiratory problems
🌡️ Heat-related illnesses
⚠️ Other serious health risks

When organic waste is poorly managed, it releases gases that pollute the air we breathe and worsen climate conditions.

This creates a dangerous cycle:
🌍 Poor waste management → Air pollution → Climate change → Health risks

👉 But this can be prevented.

♻️ Separate your waste at source
🌱 Compost organic waste
🚫 Reduce the amount of waste you generate

Protect the environment. Protect your health.
