Nearby in Kuwait, investigators recently dismantled a scheme involving dozens of shell companies used to register and sell fake residency permits to expatriate workers.

The people running it were not strangers on the street.

They looked legitimate enough that workers trusted them with their money and their future.

There are two visa routes into Oman for work, and mixing them up is where most confusion starts:

📌 Direct employment visa. You already have a confirmed job and that employer sponsors you directly.

📌 Freelance visa. You do not have a job lined up yet. You enter through a sponsor, and once you are settled, you search for work.

Most Nigerians go the freelance route because they do not already have an Omani employer chasing them down.

That is normal and it works, as long as the person arranging it for you is reliable.

The distinction is not nationality. The distinction is whether you already have a job offer or not.

Anyone telling you otherwise is either confused or trying to push you toward a more expensive package you do not need.

NIGERIA IMMIGRATION JUST WARNED THE PUBLIC AGAIN ABOUT FAKE VISA AGENTS.

AND PEOPLE ARE STILL DOING THE EXACT THING THAT GETS THEM SCAMMED.

The Nigeria Immigration Service pointed people to the official platforms for visa applications, e-Visa, Temporary Work Permit and the Combined Expatriate Residence Permit.

After another wave of fake websites and fixers.

This is not the first warning this year and it will not be the last.

Yet people still send money to a stranger in a WhatsApp group because the price was small and the person "sounded serious.

A real agent gives you a physical location, a real phone line you can call before you pay, and answers every question you throw at them before you commit a single naira.

If someone is rushing you or dodging your questions, that is your answer.

THE OMAN VISA IS FREE

Reality: getting into Oman legally involves real costs. Visa processing, medical exams, flights, and the agent's service.

Anyone telling you it's completely free is either lying or setting you up for something worse once you land.

Here's the part people get confused: there are two paths.

Direct employment visa:
you already have a confirmed job and that employer sponsors you.

Freelance visa: no job lined up yet, you enter on a sponsor's backing, and once you're in Oman and hold your Bataka (your Omani ID card), you're free to search for work in any field, any state.

The mistake we see most: people trying to lock down a job from Nigeria before they even have a visa or sponsor.

That almost never works and can waste a full year.

WHAT ACTUALLY CHANGED FOR WORKERS IN OMAN THIS YEAR

Oman updated its labour law and it directly affects anyone planning to work there.

Switching employers is now easier than before, the new law makes transferring jobs simpler than it used to be

Anti-discrimination protections now apply to workers

Starting this year, benefits like employment injury cover, maternity leave and paternity leave are being extended to expatriate workers, not just Omanis.

The minimum wage for expatriate workers is currently 325 Omani Rial a month (MenaJobs)

Expatriates still make up the large majority of workers in the private sector, so the demand for foreign labour is not slowing down.

Takeaway: Oman is not shutting the door on foreign workers, it is actually building more protection into the system.
