The White Lady of the Brandberg — Where Ancient Stories Meet Namibia's Highest Peak.

Deep within the granite heart of the Brandberg Mountain — Namibia's highest peak rising 2,573 metres above the Namib Desert — lies one of the most extraordinary and mysterious works of art ever created by human hands.

Around Brandberg Mountain there are over 50,000 rock paintings, with more being discovered each year — making it quite simply Namibia's largest open-air art gallery. And at the centre of it all stands the most famous of them all — the White Lady.

Made from ochre, charcoal, manganese and hematite — bound together with blood serum and egg white — this extraordinary artwork is estimated to be between 1,000 and 2,000 years old.

But here's the twist — today researchers agree that the "White Lady" is in fact a male figure — a shaman or medicine man — and all theories of a European or Mediterranean origin have been firmly dismissed.

Have you seen a 𝗞𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿?

The vernacular name "klipspringer" is a compound of the Afrikaans words klip ("rock") and springer ("leaper"). It is a name that perfectly captures this antelope's most defining characteristic — its extraordinary ability to leap and dance across rocky terrain with breath-taking agility.

The klipspringer (Oreotragus oreotragus) is a small antelope found in eastern and southern Africa.

Klipspringers are recognised for their compact and robust build, standing approximately 43–60 centimetres tall at the shoulder and weighing between 8 to 18 kilograms. Their coats, which vary from yellowish-grey to reddish-brown, offer excellent camouflage against their rocky surroundings. They also feature short, sharp horns measuring around 7.5–9 centimetres — present only on males.

A klipspringer's hooves are cylindrical, meaning they have parallel sides which form the shape of a cylinder. The hooves are long and downward-pointing with blunt rounded tips, providing adaptation and agility in its rocky environment while enhancing its grip.

One of the most endearing things about klipspringers is their remarkable loyalty to their partners. The klipspringer is monogamous to a much greater extent than other antelopes — individuals of opposite sexes exhibit long-term to lifelong pair bonding. The mates tend to stay as close as within 5 metres of each other at most times. They take turns keeping a lookout for predators while the other feeds, and face any danger together. They are truly Africa's most devoted couple!
