Breaking new ground at Matola terminal!

Grindrod celebrated a major milestone with an official groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of the Matola terminal expansion programme.

The event was attended by His Excellency Eng. João Jorge Matlombe, Minister of Transport and Logistics, who launched Phase 1 of the Back-of-Terminal (BOT) development, reaffirming Grindrod’s long-term commitment to Mozambique’s logistics infrastructure and regional trade growth.

Just six months ago, His Excellency Daniel Francisco Chapo, President of the Republic of Mozambique, inaugurated Grindrod’s new administrative building and announced the start of this project. Today, that vision moves into action — advancing Mozambique’s position as a key regional trade gateway.

Phase 1 represents a USD 40 million investment and will fully mechanise the Back-of-Terminal area, increasing capacity from 8 to 12 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) and expanding the site from 40 800 m² to 157 760 m². Completion is expected in early 2027.

Phase 2, now in planning, will integrate the Front and Back of Terminal, adding new storage and loading infrastructure to ultimately handle up to 15 mtpa.

“This expansion strengthens the Maputo Corridor and reinforces Mozambique’s position as a regional logistics hub,” said H.E. Eng. João Jorge Matlombe.

“The restart of this expansion marks a renewed commitment to operational excellence and competitive logistics solutions,” added Kwazi Mabaso, CEO of Grindrod Bulk and incoming Group CEO of Grindrod Limited.

Together with the Government of Mozambique and MPDC, Grindrod continues to invest in infrastructure that connects Africa’s trade with the world.

Empowering women at Grindrod: Pink October awareness event

On the 24th of October, Grindrod hosted a special event to support the Pink October campaign, aimed at raising awareness about breast cancer. This gathering brought together our incredible female employees, along with those from our subcontracted companies, to share knowledge and support each other.
The highlight of the day was a thought-provoking presentation by Dr Edner Phiri from Clínica Higia. She spoke on crucial topics including prevention, early diagnosis, and overall women’s health care, providing valuable insights that resonated with everyone present.
The event fostered a warm atmosphere for interaction, complete with light snacks, encouraging open conversation and connection among participants.
It was a productive and meaningful day, reinforcing our commitment to the health and well-being of our female workforce.
Together, we stand strong in the fight against breast cancer.

We are excited to welcome Kwazi Mabaso as the new Chief Executive Officer of Grindrod Limited, effective 1 December 2025.

This follows our June announcement advising shareholders of the resignation of our outgoing CEO, Xolani Mbambo.

Kwazi steps into this role following his successful tenure as CEO of Grindrod Terminals, where he has been instrumental in shaping and executing some of the Group’s most strategic initiatives.

With a strong track record in cross-border leadership, stakeholder management, and large-scale project delivery, Kwazi brings both a global perspective and deep experience within African markets. This unique combination has seen him play a central role in driving Grindrod’s strategy, transformation, and growth, including the significant mergers and acquisitions concluded this year.

As we thank Xolani Mbambo for his leadership and contributions, we look forward to the next chapter under Kwazi’s guidance, one focused on unlocking opportunities, building partnerships, and creating lasting value.

Grindrod assinala dois anos da Campanha de Cultura de Segurança Bassopa e lança “The Grindrod Way”

Maputo, Moçambique, 24 de setembro de 2025 – A Grindrod celebrou esta semana, em Maputo, o segundo aniversário da sua Campanha de Cultura de Segurança Bassopa, com a participação de mais de 300 pessoas entre colaboradores, contratados e parceiros num evento dinâmico que incluiu actuações culturais, partilhas de histórias pessoais e a entrega de prémios que reconheceram aqueles que vivem a segurança diariamente e que vão além dos valores da empresa.

Durante o evento, a Grindrod apresentou The Grindrod Way, uma estrutura recém-criada com foco no crescimento do negócio e na eficácia operacional através de uma abordagem centrada nas pessoas. Kwazi Mabaso, CEO da Divisão Bulk da Grindrod, afirmou: “Temos orgulho em apresentar The Grindrod Way, um modelo integrado que visa impulsionar tanto a excelência do cliente como a excelência operacional, dando sempre prioridade à segurança, aos padrões éticos e ao nosso propósito organizacional.”

Desde o seu lançamento em 2023, a campanha Bassopa contribuiu para avanços significativos em segurança, incluindo uma redução de 62% em Acidentes com Perda de Tempo (LTI) e uma melhoria de 47% na Taxa de Frequência de Acidentes com Perda de Tempo (LTIFR). Estes resultados foram alcançados através de medidas proactivas como a promoção da comunicação aberta, a resolução de quase acidentes, a implementação de procedimentos estruturados de encerramento de turnos e a disponibilização de coaching entre pares.
