One Logistics tip a day ;-
📦 10 Logistics Terms Every Non-Logistics Person Should Know

Here are 10 simple terms that can help anyone sound like a logistics pro:

🔟 Top Logistics Terms (Explained)

TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit)
➡️ A standard size for shipping containers. One TEU = 1 small container.

Incoterms
➡️ Rules that define who pays for what during shipping (e.g., freight, insurance, risk).

Bill of Lading (B/L)
➡️ A legal document between shipper and carrier that confirms goods were loaded.

Demurrage
➡️ Late fees you pay when you keep containers too long at the port.

FOB (Free on Board)
➡️ The buyer takes ownership once the goods are on the ship.

FCL / LCL Cargo
➡️ FCL = Full Container Load (one shipment fills a container).
➡️ LCL = Less than Container Load (your goods share space with others).

Freight Forwarder
➡️ A company that organizes shipping for importers/exporters.

Customs Clearance
➡️ The process of getting goods legally approved to enter a country.

Lead Time
➡️ The total time from order placement to delivery.

Supply Chain
➡️ The full journey of a product — from raw material to customer.

💡 Why This Matters:

Understanding these basics helps professionals in sales, finance, procurement, and tech collaborate better with logistics teams.

One Shipping info tip a day;-
PORT & DOCUMENTATION — 11 ABBREVIATIONS EVERY SEAFRER SHOULD KNOW
From arrival planning and berthing to cargo documentation and chartering, these abbreviations appear regularly in port operations and shipping documents.
📌 ETA — Estimated Time of Arrival
📌 ETD — Estimated Time of Departure
📌 ETB — Estimated Time of Berthing
📌 ETC — Estimated Time of Completion
📌 NOR — Notice of Readiness
📌 LOA — Length Overall
📌 DWT — Deadweight Tonnage
📌 GRT — Gross Register Tonnage
📌 NRT — Net Register Tonnage
📌 BL — Bill of Lading
📌 C/P — Charter Party
🚢 A useful distinction: ETA, ETB and ETD are mainly used for planning and communication, while NOR, BL and C/P are important in the commercial and contractual side of shipping.
Important tonnage note: GRT and NRT are traditional register-tonnage terms. Under the IMO 1969 Tonnage Convention, the modern statutory terms are GT (Gross Tonnage) and NT (Net Tonnage).

One Freight Forwarding tip a day;-
Demurrage vs. Detention – What's the Difference?

Demurrage and Detention are two common shipping charges, but they apply at different stages of the logistics process.

Export Detention:-
Starts when the empty container is picked up from the depot.
Ends when the loaded container is returned to the terminal.

If the container is kept outside the terminal longer than the free time, detention charges apply.

Demurrage
Begins when the loaded container is inside the port/terminal waiting to be loaded onto the vessel.

If it stays beyond the free time before sailing, demurrage charges apply.

Import Demurrage:-
Starts after the container is discharged from the vessel and remains inside the terminal.

If the importer does not collect it within the free time, demurrage charges are incurred.

Detention
Starts when the container leaves the terminal.

Ends when the empty container is returned to the designated depot.
If the empty container is returned late, detention charges apply.

Key Difference
Demurrage: Charges for a container staying inside the port or terminal beyond the free time.

Detention: Charges for a container staying outside the port or terminal beyond the free time.

One Shipping tip a day;-
Here is a detailed summary and context breakdown of the infographic comparing Shipping Instructions (SI) and Verified Gross Mass (VGM) in export logistics:
Overview
While many people in export logistics confuse Shipping Instructions (SI) and Verified Gross Mass (VGM), they serve completely different purposes.
SI answers the question: "What are the shipment details?"

VGM answers the question: "How much does the packed container actually weight?"

1. Shipping Instructions (SI)
SI refers to the set of details provided by the exporter or shipper to the shipping line or freight forwarder specifically for preparing the Bill of Lading (B/L).
SI generally includes:

Shipper & Consignee details
Notify Party
Container & Seal Number
Cargo description
Packages & weight
Port of Loading (POL)
Port of Discharge (POD)
Freight terms
B/L instructions
2. Verified Gross Mass (VGM)
VGM is the verified total gross mass of a packed export container. It is required for the safe stowage and loading of the container onto the vessel.
VGM Calculation Formula:

VGM=Cargo Weight+Packaging Weight+Dunnage/Lashing+Container Tare Weight

Key Differences: SI vs. VGM
Aspect Shipping Instructions (SI) Verified Gross Mass (VGM)
Purpose
Used for B/L preparation
Used for vessel safety & stowage
Content
Contains shipment/document details
Confirms container's verified weight
Submitted to
Shipping Line / Forwarder
Relevant carrier / terminal process
Helps
Prepare transport documents
Determine safe vessel loading
Nature
Mainly documentation-related
Mainly safety-related ;-

Important Note
Submitting SI does not replace VGM. Both are important and required parts of the export shipment process.

One Shipping tip a day;-
Understanding a "Voyage" in International Shipping

1. Introduction: Defining a Voyage

Core Concept: Same Ship, Different Ports, One Voyage.
In the context of international shipping, a voyage refers to the complete journey of a vessel (ship) from one port to another, carrying cargo, containers, or passengers. It is the fundamental unit of movement in global trade.

2. Illustrative Example

To understand the concept, consider a practical scenario:

· The Route: A container ship sails from Nhava Sheva (India) → Singapore → Rotterdam (Netherlands).
· The Definition: Even though the ship stops at multiple ports (Singapore being a transit point), this complete sailing movement from the initial loading port to the final destination is referred to as a single voyage.

3. Key Elements of a Voyage

Every voyage is defined by six critical components used for tracking and logistics:

1. Voyage Number: A unique reference number assigned to a particular sailing. (Used for tracking specific trips).
2. Port of Loading (POL): The specific port where cargo is loaded onto the vessel.
3. Port of Discharge (POD): The specific port where cargo is unloaded from the vessel.
4. Transit Ports: Intermediate ports where the vessel may stop or where containers may be transshipped (moved from one ship to another) during the journey.
5. ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival): The projected time the vessel will arrive at a specific port.
6. ETD (Estimated Time of Departure): The projected time the vessel will depart from a specific port.

4. Why is the Voyage Concept Important?

Tracking a voyage is essential for the global supply chain. It allows key stakeholders to:

· Track the movement of cargo accurately.
· Identify the vessel's sailing schedule.
· Plan logistics and inventory management.

Who relies on this information?

· Exporters
· Importers
· Freight Forwarders
· Shipping Lines

5. Simple Meaning & Documentation

· Simple Definition: A voyage is simply the planned journey of a vessel between ports.
· In Shipping Documents: You will often see the terminology "Vessel Name + Voyage Number" (e.g., MSC Anna / 024E). This combination is the standard way to identify the specific sailing carrying a shipment, ensuring cargo is tracked to the correct trip, not just the correct ship.
