The Symbiocene is a concept first proposed by Australian eco-philosopher Dr. Glenn Albrecht in 2016. Where the Anthropocene (our current epoch) has been defined by human dominance and the extraction and degradation of natural systems, the Symbiocene is its antithesis: an era in which human culture, technology, and economy are shaped by, and in service of, the interconnected web of life on Earth.

As Albrecht describes it: "when life works with life to further life, so that all can thrive."

Permaculture has always been rooted in that same philosophy — working with nature, not against it. That makes David a uniquely powerful voice for what this transition could actually look like. 🌱

This talk is held in conjunction with a panel discussion "It’s 2100.Welcome to the Symbiocene" hosted by RMIT University and the Symbiocene Institute at the National Gallery of Victoria as part of Melbourne Design Week.

Dueñas from Transición Colombia attended the First International Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels in Santa Marta (24–29 April 2026). What unfolded there went far beyond a policy meeting, it felt like a space where different worlds, languages, and ways of caring for life came together.

Indigenous peoples, youth, faith groups, governments, scientists, and social movements all shared their perspectives and urgencies, but with a common feeling: the transition beyond fossil fuels has to be real, fair, and collective.

Denise came away from the experience feeling deeply aligned and grateful, reminded that this transition is already happening, and that it’s something we are still shaping together.
