How Has Air Cargo Demand Performed Recently?

According to IATA, global air cargo demand measured in Cargo Tonne-Kilometers (CTKs) declined by 4.8% year-over-year in March, reflecting a more challenging operating environment driven by geopolitical tensions, network disruptions in the Middle East, and seasonal distortions.

Regional performance remained highly uneven: Africa recorded the strongest growth at +7.0%, while the Middle East experienced a significant contraction of 54.3%, highlighting the impact of ongoing instability on international air freight flows.

March market conditions were heavily influenced by overlapping Chinese New Year effects, escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, and rising fuel prices. Together, these factors disrupted traditional trade lanes, reduced operational efficiency, and increased volatility across global air cargo networks.
