This image shows a detailed corner of the Temple of the Frescoes (Structure 16), located in the archaeological zone of Tulum, Mexico.
Structure Details
• Mascarones:
The carved stone faces on the corners represent the deity Itzamná, the Maya god of the sky and wisdom.
• Conservation:
These architectural details have survived for more than 600 years, preserving distinctive features that allow us to identify them today. Originally, many of these structures were decorated with vibrant colors.
• Location:
The Temple of the Frescoes is one of the best-preserved buildings in Tulum, set on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea. It was named after the mural paintings found inside.
Tulum was one of the last major Maya cities still active during the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century.
