She is Italian. She came to Little Italy to find out if America got it right.

Everyone photographs the same three streets in Copenhagen. Almost nobody in those photos has actually gone swimming.

Nyhavn's coloured houses are genuinely lovely, and the canal tour past them is a fine way to spend an afternoon. But it's also the one thing every single visitor does, at the one spot every single visitor stands in.

Locals are three canals over at the harbour baths in Islands Brygge, where decades of cleanup work turned the old industrial harbour into water clean enough to swim in, for free, right in the middle of the city. Bring a towel, not a wallet.

Stone Town has been a global crossroads for two centuries, and most Western travellers still couldn't point to it on a map.

Arab, Persian, Indian and European traders all built this town on the spice route, and it shows in the architecture: carved wooden doors, coral-stone buildings, a skyline that looks like nowhere else in East Africa. UNESCO listed it decades ago. The crowds haven't caught up yet.

August is the reason to go now. It's the driest month of the year, rain chances sitting near 5%, with steady trade winds and the start of the clove harvest scenting the air across the island. Dhow cruises at sunset, spice farm tours through the plantations outside town, and the reefs off Mnemba Island are all at their best in this exact window.

Once the wider travel world properly discovers Stone Town, the empty rooftop bars and quiet alleyways at golden hour won't stay quiet for long. Most visitors never look past the beach resorts. You are not most visitors.

A man found a comet in 1862 and didn't believe himself enough to say so. Three nights later, someone else spotted the same one and got his name attached to it forever.

That comet is Swift-Tuttle, and its debris trail is what we call the Perseids. Every August, Earth ploughs through the wreckage it left behind, and this year the timing is unusually good: the shower peaks the night of 12-13 August, exactly when the moon is new. No wash-out light. Just dark sky and streaks moving at 130,000 miles an hour.

Santa Cruz de La Palma has protected its night sky by law since 1988, the first place on Earth to do it. Rooftop terraces there are already booking out for the date.

The tourist who insists on a 10am-6pm itinerary in 44C heat isn't unlucky. They've made a choice a more curious traveller wouldn't.

Seville locals have run on this rhythm for generations: out early, indoors through the brutal middle hours, back out once the stone cools and the plazas fill up again after dark. It isn't laziness, it's the only way to actually enjoy a city this hot in summer.

The best version of this trip has no fixed hours at all. Start at sunrise, stop for coffee whenever you want it, pause the whole afternoon, and pick it back up the next morning if today ran long. That flexibility is the entire point of exploring somewhere at your own pace rather than someone else's schedule.

There is a black space on the wall of the Doge's Palace where a portrait should hang. It has been empty since 1355, and it was left that way on purpose.

Marino Falier became doge at seventy-six, an old man rewarded with Venice's top job after a long career. Four months later he was plotting to overthrow the council that elected him. The betrayal, the trial, and the ex*****on all happened within days of each other, on the doge's own staircase.

Venice had 120 doges. Only Falier had his face removed from the Great Hall entirely, replaced with a black veil and a warning in Latin. Walk through the Sala del Maggior Consiglio today and the gap is still there, between the other 119 faces.

The beaches look the same as they always have. The stories beneath them are something else.

The Kombumerri people have called this stretch of Queensland home for over 23,000 years. They fished these coastal waters with trained dolphins and dingoes working alongside them. That is not a typo.

Most people spend three days in Valencia eating what they think is paella and leave without seeing the city.

El Carmen, the old Moorish quarter, predates the Christian reconquest of 1238. Its streets run on a medieval logic that ignores the Roman grid underneath it. You can feel the city's age there in a way the tourist circuit does not offer.

Horchata at Santa Catalina on a hot afternoon is one of the small pleasures that makes Valencia make sense. The horchateria has been doing exactly this since 1836.

The Turia Gardens are the best-kept non-secret in the city: nine kilometres of park built into the old riverbed, used daily by locals, walked past daily by tourists heading straight for the architecture at the far end.

The earthquake hit at 9:40am on All Saints' Day, when half the city was at church. The Marquis of Pombal was not.

While the court was still processing the scale of disaster, he declared martial law, expelled the Jesuits from Portugal, put aristocratic rivals on trial, and executed them in public. The disaster gave him cover for everything he had wanted to do for years.

When the king died, Pombal was tried for abuse of power and exiled. The city he built remains. This is the kind of story that does not appear in the highlights. You know the ones we mean.
