HOW BIG ARE THEY?
They’re HUGE!
Whale sharks are the largest fish in the world.
The ones seen in the Bay of La Paz are usually juveniles, averaging 5 meters — adults can
reach 12-18 meters.
HOW MUCH DO THEY WEIGH?
Think tons. Literally.
Adults can weigh up to 34 tons.
They feed by filtering plankton and tiny organisms from the water.
Big body. Tiny meal.
HOW FAST DO THEY SWIM?
They cruise at about 4 km/h (2.5 mph).
They’re just here to feed and relax — we’re lucky to share the water with them.
No rush. Just vibes.
WHEN CAN YOU SEE THEM IN LA PAZ?
Season starts in fall!
Whale sharks usually arrive in the Bay of La Paz around October and stay through fall and
winter.
The authorized snorkeling season generally runs October to April, depending on ocean
conditions.
Pro tip: Always check the current season before booking.
HOW TO EXPERIENCE A RESPONSIBLE ENCOUNTER?
Keep your distance: never touch, ride, or chase them.
