The symbolic relevance that the mushroom represents for the Mazatecs is evidenced in the words of Don Sabino, a man of knowledge from Tenango:
“The mushroom is the blood of Christ and it has everything our Lord said when he was in the world. He splashed the ground with blood and became a mushroom. He ascended to heaven but left the blood that had his words, his sons, he who has courage takes it because it is the way to find the truth. With the mushroom you can see everything, the sky, the sea, the land and the animals. What you are trying to do with the fungus is to go back, to the beginning and the future. Through the mushroom you can see Adam and Eve. "
