Four tourists from Gujarat have been booked after a video allegedly showing them abusing staff at a resort in Arunachal Pradesh went viral on social media. The incident occurred at Mishmi Hills Resort in the remote Dibang Valley district.

Reports state that the confrontation began when resort staff reminded the tourists about the property’s “no outside food and alcohol” policy, which had been communicated at the time of check-in. The situation allegedly escalated into verbal abuse, with staff members particularly women employees reportedly subjected to derogatory remarks. One of the accused is also said to have attempted physical assault and damaged resort property, including a display board listing house rules.

Police have registered an FIR and invoked sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita along with provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Authorities noted that such incidents can negatively impact tourism in sensitive border regions.

The viral video has sparked widespread online reactions, with many calling for accountability and greater respect toward hospitality workers and local communities.

Thank you BTMS Anini

The Biodiversity and Tourism Management Society (BTMS), Anini, strongly condemns the reprehensible conduct allegedly exhibited by Ms. Aastha Devendra Kumar Patel, Mr. Dhruv Devendra Kumar Patel, Mrs. Smitaben Devendra Kumar Patel, and Mr. Devendra Kumar Patel at Mishmi Hills Resort, Anini, on 20 February 2026.

As per the FIR lodged in connection with the incident, the allegations include serious offences such as criminal intimidation, attempted assault on female staff, use of obscene and abusive language, mischief resulting in damage to property, threats of defamation, and other cognizable offences under the law.

BTMS expresses deep concern and dismay over the reported acts of intimidation and misconduct directed at local staff members and the community. Such behaviour stands in complete contradiction to the principles of respect, dignity, and mutual understanding that form the foundation of responsible tourism.

We extend our unwavering solidarity to the affected staff and commend the courage and integrity of those who reported the matter through proper legal channels. We reaffirm our full faith in the rule of law and urge the concerned authorities to ensure a fair, impartial, and expeditious investigation, and to take appropriate action in accordance with the law.

Tourism must serve as a bridge between cultures and a catalyst for sustainable development. It cannot, and must not, come at the expense of the safety, dignity, and well-being of our local community. Anini and the larger Dibang Valley region take pride in their tradition of warm hospitality; however, hospitality must always be grounded in mutual respect and lawful conduct.

We call upon all stakeholders—residents, visitors, and institutions alike—to uphold the values of civility, responsibility, and respect, so that our region continues to remain a safe, welcoming, and dignified destination for all.

We at Mishmi Hills, as a hospitality entity and service provider, we have always made sincere and continuous efforts to deliver the best possible services to our valued guests arriving from every corner of India and across the globe. Our journey in an offbeat mountain destination like Anini has never been easy, yet it has always been guided by our commitment to warmth, professionalism, and genuine hospitality.

Over the years, we have occasionally informed the public about instances of guest misconduct. However, as an organisation rooted in the values of peace, tranquility, and communal harmony, we have consistently chosen dialogue, patience, and understanding over confrontation.

In the recent incident at Mishmi Hills Resort, Anini, we had hoped, as we always do, for an apologetic and responsible response from the concerned individuals. Unfortunately, instead of resolution, our team faced intimidation and threats, including claims of influence through political authorities, senior officials, and large corporate entities, as reflected in the video documentation already shared.

Today, we are further compelled to bring to public notice additional threatening messages allegedly received from Mr. Devendra Patel. This step has not been taken lightly, but out of necessity, transparency, and the responsibility to protect the dignity and safety of our staff and establishment.
We wish to make it absolutely clear that Mishmi Hills stands against no community, clan, caste, or religion. We are peace-loving tribal people by heritage and nature lovers by passion. Our mission has always been to promote harmony through tourism while showcasing the beauty, culture, and hospitality of our land.

Despite operating with limited resources in a remote and emerging tourism destination, we have been honoured to host guests from diverse backgrounds who have supported and stood with us during both good and challenging times. To all our well-wishers, guests, and supporters, we express our deepest gratitude. Your encouragement motivates us to continuously improve through genuine feedback and constructive suggestions.

However, it is deeply unfortunate when individuals attempt to tarnish our reputation through threats, intimidation, false allegations, or attempts to pressure us with negative online reviews or demands to shut down our establishment. Hospitality cannot function under fear or coercion.
We firmly believe that matters of this nature should be addressed through lawful and appropriate channels. There is no place for violence, hatred, or intimidation in tourism or in society.

We are peace-loving tribal people, give respect, and you will always receive greater respect in return.

Let us all work together to promote sustainable, respectful, and responsible tourism, and create a positive ecosystem where travellers, communities, and hospitality workers can coexist with dignity and mutual understanding.

Good morning,

Formal Appeal Regarding Repeated Guest Misconduct and Request for Protective Guidelines.

I am a hospitality professional by training and a graduate who completed my studies as the topper of my college. During my early career, I had the opportunity to intern at one of the finest hotels in the country at that time. I later worked as an Events Manager for several years, during which I stayed and worked in some of the most elite hotels across India. I also successfully coordinated international travel for a group of nearly 200 guests, managing their entire itinerary and hospitality arrangements.

However, over the past three years in Anini, I have encountered situations with certain guests that are unlike anything I experienced during my professional career elsewhere. Throughout my years in hospitality, I have dealt with challenging guests, but even in cases of misbehavior, guests eventually acknowledged their mistakes and apologized for inappropriate conduct.

While we are trained to believe that “the guest is always right,” I strongly feel that there must be reasonable boundaries. Instances where guests resort to verbal abuse, false accusations, intimidation, and harassment merely to obtain minor discounts should not be tolerated.

Yesterday, we faced an extremely distressing incident involving guests who, under the pretext of being “Gen Z,” verbally abused my staff using highly derogatory and offensive language. The conflict arose after my staff politely informed them clearly and in the presence of their driver that outside food and alcohol are not permitted inside the premises. The guests later denied being informed and accused our staff of misconduct.
Despite offering apologies in case of any possible miscommunication from our side, the guests continued making false allegations in front of multiple witnesses, including other guests and staff members present at the time. The situation escalated further when one of the individuals broke a photo frame, threatened to damage property, and attempted to physically assault a female staff member.

Upon my arrival, abusive and derogatory slurs were directed at my staff. The guests used extremely offensive language and intimidation tactics throughout the confrontation. Ironically, their total food bill amounted to only a few hundred rupees, out of which they paid merely ₹250, yet repeatedly threatened us by saying they would post negative reviews online to damage our reputation.

The incident became even more distressing on a personal level, as I am currently pregnant, and despite my condition, I was subjected to mockery and disrespect during the altercation. With the intervention of the DTO, we attempted to resolve the matter peacefully by speaking with the elderly members accompanying them; however, instead of de-escalating the situation, they continued making exaggerated claims about their professional positions and influence.

As hospitality professionals, we chose restraint and avoided filing an FIR or evicting them immediately, keeping in mind that Anini is an emerging tourist destination and that such incidents could negatively affect its image. Nevertheless, repeated experiences of this nature are mentally and emotionally exhausting for our team.

Most of my staff members are local youth from Arunachal Pradesh whom we are actively training and encouraging to build careers in hospitality. They have travelled far from their homes to work here, and it is deeply disheartening for them to face humiliation, abusive language, and threats while performing their duties sincerely. Protecting their dignity and safety is my responsibility as an employer and team leader.
While we may address operational matters with the travel agency involved, recurring incidents of guest misconduct continue to impact us psychologically and professionally, with no accountability placed on those responsible.

Therefore, I humbly request tourism organization to consider establishing clear guidelines or an official framework that defines limits to guest behavior. There should be written provisions ensuring that guests cannot damage property, verbally abuse staff, or engage in threatening conduct while hospitality providers attempt to resolve situations amicably.
This is not an isolated incident, and without structured support or protective policies, service providers like us are left vulnerable despite acting in good faith.

I sincerely appeal for understanding and intervention so that both hospitality standards and the dignity of service professionals can be preserved.

Thank you

Mental health awareness plays a crucial role in ensuring the overall well-being and growth of individuals and communities. In today’s fast-paced world, stress, anxiety, and emotional challenges affect people of all ages, especially students and parents. Mental health camps and workshops help in early identification of issues, build resilience, and empower individuals with knowledge and practical coping techniques. They also break social stigma, encourage open communication, and promote a supportive and healthy environment for young minds.

Under the leadership of Mrs. Chimmi Linggi, Managing Director, Mishmi Hills Group, and Mrs. Nanu Linggi, along with the dedicated members of the Self Help Group AHECHU, a meaningful workshop on mental health for parents and students was successfully conducted at Anini, Dibang Valley District.

We extend heartfelt gratitude to Theko Tayu Chairman, Zila Parishad, Dibang Valley District, and all contributors for their valuable support in making this awareness initiative impactful and successful.
