Tamegroute pottery is one of the most distinctive and historic ceramic traditions in Morocco, originating from the village of Tamegroute in the south of the country. It is especially famous for its unique green glaze, which can vary from bright green to deep olive tones. This color is produced using a mixture that includes copper oxide, combined with local clay. The exact recipe has been passed down through generations and remains a closely guarded secret among local artisan families.
This pottery tradition dates back to at least the 17th century, when Tamegroute was an important center along the trans-Saharan trade routes. The ceramics were widely traded and appreciated for their durability and distinctive appearance.
The production process remains entirely traditional. Artisans collect clay from the nearby Drâa River, shape it by hand or using simple pottery wheels, then apply the green glaze. The pieces are fired in old earthen kilns fueled by natural materials such as palm leaves and olive pits. Because the firing process is not strictly controlled, each piece develops unique variations in color and texture.

This illustration beautifully maps out a classic Moroccan journey, connecting the country’s most iconic landscapes and cities 🌍✨
Starting from Marrakech, the route crosses the majestic Atlas Mountains toward Ouarzazate, known as the gateway to the desert and the land of ancient kasbahs. It then continues through the dramatic Dades Valley, carved by nature over centuries, before reaching the golden dunes of Merzouga Desert, where camel treks and magical sunsets await.
On the other side, the path leads west to Essaouira, the charming coastal city on the Atlantic Ocean, famous for its fresh sea breeze, historic medina, and artistic vibe.
Altogether, this map tells the story of Morocco’s diversity: mountains, desert, valleys, and ocean—an unforgettable adventure blending culture, nature, and tradition

Who are the Nomads?

‎“They are families who live a traditional lifestyle, moving from place to place in search of water and pasture for their animals. Their life is simple, peaceful, and very connected to nature.”

‎“Nomadic families usually live in tents made of goat hair. They wake up very early to take care of their goats, sheep, and camels. Their day is all about herding animals, preparing food, and collecting water.”

‎“Nomads are known for their warm hospitality. Even with their simple life, they always welcome visitors with tea, a smile, and great respect.”

‎“When they prepare Moroccan tea, it’s not just a drink. It’s a symbol of friendship and connection. They often prepare it slowly, with care, as a way to honor their guests.”

‎“Nomad women are incredibly strong. They take care of the children, prepare meals, weave carpets, and often make the tents themselves. Their crafts are unique and full of history.”

‎“Nomad children grow up in nature. They learn early how to take care of animals and help their families. Some of them walk long distances to go to school.”

‎“They move depending on the seasons. In summer they go to higher mountains to escape the heat; in winter they move to warmer valleys.”

‎“Life for nomads is beautiful but not easy. Water scarcity, long distances, and extreme weather are big challenges in their daily life.”

The Agafay desert is located in the Moroccan High Atlas Mountains, near Marrakech. Popular for its rocky, barren landscape and is often referred to as a "stone desert" due to the lack of sand dunes typically associated with traditional deserts. This area has become a popular destination for tourists seeking unique landscapes and outdoor activities such as off-road driving, camping, and stargazing.
