Kernavė: ancient history, quiet landscapes and one of Lithuania’s most unique places.

Once the medieval capital of Lithuania, today it invites you to walk across its mysterious hillforts and feel centuries of history beneath your feet.

The earliest human settlements in the area date back to around Stone Age 9,000–8,000 BC but it is first mentioned in written historical sources in 1279.

March 16 in Latvia is a remembrance day for Latvian soldiers who fell in World War II while serving in the Latvian Legion.

The date marks March 16, 1944, when the two Latvian Legion divisions fought together on the Eastern Front.

For many Latvians, the day is not about ideology, but about honoring soldiers who died when Latvia was caught between N**i Germany and the Soviet Union.

After the Soviet reoccupation, many legionnaires’ families faced deportations, imprisonment, and Gulag camps.

Yet the day is still often framed by Soviet-era narratives equating the Legion with N**ism, while historians note that many soldiers were conscripted and fought mainly against Soviet occupation. 🇱🇻
