During our tour, can be seen the " pearls" of this charming city.
The main tourist interest of Grodno are its castles, only two of which have survived. But there are many other sights that Grodno has to offer because it is one of the oldest cities in Belarus.
Every tourist arriving in Grodno visits Zamkovaya Street (Castle street) - one of the oldest city streets in the center. Its length is only 360 meters. This street is one of the symbols of the city.

There are old houses and buildings on both of its sides, each of which has a historical and cultural value. For example: the House of the Sophia Brotherhood, the Masalsky Stone House, which is one of the oldest houses in Grodno, the estate of the Kharchenko state councilor, the house of Chaim the Archer, the wine shop of Rokhlya-Rutkovskaya Rachel, the house of Antsilevich counselor, the house of the fire station with a watch tower, the Lapiner House, the Shereshevsky house, the palace of Khreptovichi and others.
Zamkovaya street is the only street in Belarus where two royal castles are located.

Worth visiting is the Cathedral of St. Francis Xavier. The Jesuit monastery, which was next to it since the 17th century, was the richest in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
The decoration of the Church Tower is the oldest working clock in Europe (the mechanism for it was manufactured in the late 15th century).

It is also worth visiting the Church of St. John, which is an architectural monument of the 19th century. The church is built in the Neo-Gothic style and, for today, is the only working Lutheran church in the country.

In the center of the city, you can find one of the oldest synagogues in Europe, the Great Choral Synagogue. Today, it regularly hosts divine services, and the Jewish Museum operates here.

LV100 Great Trees.
More than 8,000 Great Trees in Latvia have already been identified, but experts estimate that these are only one quarter of Latvia's Great Trees. Therefore, as the Centenary approaches, the Office Latvia 100 of the Latvian Ministry of Culture and the Nature Conservation Agency have come up with the initiative "LV100 Great Trees" (LV100 Dižošanās). As a part of the initiative, everyone is invited to go outside and help find the Great Trees that have yet to be discovered, and, with the help of a special test, to find out which Great Tree best suits your personality.

Useful information for finding and mapping Great Trees is available on the website dizosanas.lv100.lv. A user-friendly map has been created where you can see the Great Trees that have already been identified and add new ones. The data uploaded onto the digital map will be double-checked and the newly identified trees will be followed up on by specialists from the Nature Conservation Agency. If the tree fits the defined criteria, it will be registered in the official register of Great Trees and an identifying placard will be placed near the tree.
reat Trees are the oldest and largest examples of their respective species. In many cases they are significant and grand elements in the landscape —testimony to the majesty and splendour of the natural world. They also play an important role in maintaining species diversity—they are home to many living organisms, including some that are rare and endangered. Often these Great Trees are of cultural-historical significance as well—they are associated with historical events and are witnesses to history throughout the centuries. They tell the story of Latvia and the Latvian people, just as the one hundred oaks that were planted around the Latvian border on May 4th of this year for the opening of the Centenary celebrations will tell about the people who planted them and about Latvia as it is today.
Until now, most of the Great Trees found in Latvia have been oaks, pines, and lindens. Less common are firs, pines, and birches. Great Trees are rarely found in forests; more often they can found in clearings, primeval hollows, river valleys, parks, country lanes, old homesteads, and among the dunes along the seashore.

From 2rd to 4th of March: St Casimir’s fair in Vilnius

St Casimir’s Fair is is the biggest and the oldest craftsmen festival in Vilnius traditionally held on the weekend nearest to the 4th of March, St. Casimir’s Day. That marks the day when Casimir (the Prince of Poland and Lithuania) died. St. Casimir is the only Lithuanian Saint, so Lithuanians celebrate it’s day wildly.

The huge weekend event turn the streets of Vilnius into a feast of crafts and folk traditions. The township includes craft tents and market places with traditional Lithuanian wood carvings, knit items, jewelry, pottery, metal crafting, leather products. The visitors have an opportunity not only to buy items, but also try out their skills in various craftsmen‘s workshops. The traditional souvenir of the fair is a “palm” made of dried flowers called “Verba“ which is consecrated on a Palm Sunday (last Sunday before Easter).

It is a good opportunity to enjoy Lithuanian Folklore, to feel the history of ancient Vilnius and taste the culinary heritage of different nationalities that used to live in Vilnius.

This post sheds the light on the artistic craftwork from the villages of Vilnius region – a present-day phenomenon of
palm-weaving and its female masters. For centuries, this region has been characterized by hundreds of cultural
monuments, architectural styles, Orthodox and Catholic churches, mosques, coexistence of cultures and languages. Its biggest treasure is people devoted to their homeland, talented and forward-looking, but also cherishing traditions and crafts. Palm-weaving is undeniably one of such crafts. The hub of the traditionally called ‘Vilnius Palms’ is villages located north-west
from Vilnius outskirts. The palms conjured by diligent craftswomen are widely known and admired also in Poland, France, Germany, Italy and even remote Japan.
Awe-inspiring palms that are shimmering in golden, green and red hues remind of national colours of our homeland- Lithuania. Even though a palm branch has been widely
known from the ancient times and the beginning of Christianity, it is modern palms from Vilnius region that are marked by unique artistic value.
The Christian world celebrates Jesus' noble entry into Jerusalem on the last Sunday before Easter. In Lithuania this day is called Verbø Sekmadienis – Palm Sunday. When Christianity came to Lithuania, plants which sprouted earliest were honored during spring feasts. Even now, willows, osiers and weeping willows are consecrated on Palm Sunday.
Mythological folklore relates that one of the willows, called Blindë, had been a very fertile woman, bearing numerous children. Earth, the most fertile mother was jealous of her. When Blindë walked through a westfield, her feet sank into the mud. Blindë turned into a willow tree out of great sadness.
The osier, with male spores was regarded as an unusual tree. Folklore tells that the osier grew out of a secretly murdered man. A fife made of osier wood, speaks in a man's voice. Evil spirits avoid it because of its red color.
Most palm bunches have a branch of juniper in them. Juniper is green year round, with late ripening berries and with a peculiar odor. All these plants are principal components of palms, however cranberry, mistletoe, filbert and oak branches together with dried baby's breath and ferns are among the odd numbered pieces in the palm. P***y willows, hepaticas and some indoor plants are added to give color to the palms.
Palms were tied with colored, wooly yarns. This yarn was used to bind women's wrists, to keep away pain. That was the most popular healing method during harvest work. Before animals were let out of barns in the spring, they were incensed with a burning palm. It was also said that if a palm was planted near water and it began to sprout, there would be no water shortage.
Here are several interesting beliefs:
1 – he who goes to church on Palm Sunday without a palm in his hands, the devil will shove his tail into the hands.
2 – collecting branches to make palms, select those with many buds. The more buds, the longer will be your life.
3 – if you plant consecrated palms on both river banks, when it is the end of the world and all waters vanish, there will be drinking water where the palms are growing.
4 – one should not comb hair on Palm Sunday, because fleas will grow to the size of the palm, or buds on the branches.
5 – if the palm lasts three years, then when black clouds cover the skies, take the palm and cross the clouds with it.
6 – old palms should be burned and their ashes sprinkled over cabbages, to protect them from worms.
The making of palms begins the day after Shrove Tuesday and continues till Palm Sunday. This is a project that involves the entire family, however most often it is women's work. The most popular palms are roller shaped. Now there are wreath and whip shaped, flat and puffed out.
