A modern cabin with a comfortable bed, an autonomous air conditioner for those hot nights, and cameras that eliminate blind spots isn’t a luxury – it’s a workspace that respects the person working in it. When a driver feels comfortable and safe, they are less stressed, more focused, and better able to return home safely after a long trip. 🏁

At the end of the day, investing in the latest technology is our way of making the roads safer for everyone. Newer trucks don’t just break down less often. They come with smart systems that can step in when the human eye might miss something, like a cyclist in a blind spot or a sudden obstacle.

According to Rainer Müller-Finkeldei, Head of Product Development at Mercedes-Benz Trucks, such technologies are being developed not only to make drivers’ work easier, but also to consistently move closer to an ambitious goal: accident-free traffic. “For many years, we have been investing in research and development to further support drivers in their daily work through assistance systems and to increase the safety of all road users,” he says.

On April 6, Lithuania celebrates Road Safety Day.

To mark the occasion, we invited our colleagues to debunk common myths about trucks and share simple tips on how to safely navigate around them.

As the largest European asset-based company, we feel a strong responsibility to contribute to safer roads – not only through our operations but also through education. By raising awareness about truck behavior, blind spots, and safe driving practices, we can all help make the roads safer for everyone.

This year, Girteka launched its road safety campaign “Be Safe on the Road. Trust the Rules, Not Your Gut” – and continues to educate the public, this time on LNK’s “Labas vakaras, Lietuva”.

In the interview, CEO Mindaugas Paulauskas shared practical advice on how to stay safe around trucks – for both drivers and pedestrians:

🚛 trucks may need to move into another lane when manoeuvring

👀 blind spots are bigger than many people think

🚶 if you cannot see the driver, the driver cannot see you

⏱️ the less time you spend next to a truck, the safer

And these insights are not theoretical. Mindaugas got behind the wheel himself and drove from Norway to Spain, delivering goods for our customers to understand the reality of truck driving in practice – because improving driver experience starts with truly knowing it from the inside.

Girteka is continuing its focus on road safety by launching the "Be Safe on the Road. Trust the Rules, not Your Gut." campaign. The year-long initiative aims to raise public awareness of safe behaviour around trucks and encourage road users to replace impulsive decisions such as “I’ll make it,” “I can fit,” or “I’ll quickly squeeze in” with clear, easy-to-remember rules about distance, visibility, turning, overtaking, and braking near heavy vehicles.

“Safety starts with knowledge. As one of Europe’s largest transport companies, Girteka feels a responsibility to lead by example and contribute to safer roads for all road users. That is why we aim not only to maintain the highest safety standards in our operations but also to promote broader awareness of safe behaviour on the road,” says Mindaugas Paulauskas, CEO of Girteka Transport.

A representative survey shows that 50% of road users feel unsafe around trucks, while 43% describe their knowledge of safe manoeuvring near trucks as average, and 14% rate it as poor or very poor.

"A truck is not simply a bigger car on the road. Trucks are large and heavy, so they accelerate, brake and turn more slowly than cars” says Singaras Čepaitis, Drivers Training Team Lead at Girteka Transport.

Meet Olga and Andrey – a husband-and-wife driving team working with Girteka for nearly eight years! 🚚 ✨

Sharing one cab and thousands of kilometers together, they started team driving for a simple reason: they didn’t want to spend long periods apart. Over the years, the couple covered all major European and Scandinavian routes, delivering countless shipments while growing together both professionally and personally.

They say the job has not only made them a stronger team on the road, but also brought them closer together as a family.

Meet Arvydas – one of Girteka's drivers who’s been on the road for 12 years. His story is about passion, resilience and community.

For Arvydas, driving is a way of life. He grew up around trucks and learned the profession from his father. Today, he values the freedom of the road, clear routines, and the community among drivers.

He highlights how modern tech keeps him close to family even on long trips. Daily video calls with his daughters and conversations with colleagues on the road make each day richer.

Arvydas also values the strong bond among drivers. His story is a good reminder that logistics is built by people – experienced, committed, and proud of what they do.

Thirteen years on the road with Girteka! 🚛
That’s how long our colleague Oleh has been helping us to transport countless loads across Europe.

Today, we celebrate 13 years on the road together with Oleh, who has been driving with Girteka since 2012.

When he started, Girteka was a single large depot with a small office. Today, it’s two modern transport bases with full infrastructure for drivers, continuous fleet renewal, and dedicated training and support teams.

Oleh has grown together with the company, both professionally and personally. Over the years, he’s built a life for his family, adapted to new countries, and continues to take pride in his profession.

We would like to thank Oleh for his 13 years of dedication, professionalism, and trust, and for being an inspiring part of Girteka’s journey.
