Today We want to take you on a quick trip back in time to one of Liberia’s most historic but often overlooked gems — Hotel Africa in Virginia, just outside Monrovia.
Built in the 1970s under President William R. Tolbert Jr., Hotel Africa was more than just a hotel, it was a symbol of Liberia’s optimism and growing presence on the African stage.
Its biggest moment came in 1979 when it hosted the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) conference, welcoming leaders from across the continent and shining a spotlight on Liberia as a place of diplomacy and unity.
Back then, the hotel was a seaside marvel — lavish villas, elegant halls, and stunning ocean views, a place for national pride and celebration.
But history had other plans. After Tolbert’s overthrow in 1980 and the decades of civil war that followed, the hotel fell into neglect, looting, and disuse, like many other parts of our nation.
In recent years, the Government of Liberia has been working to reclaim and redevelop the property, aiming to breathe new life into this historic landmark and restore it as a centerpiece of tourism and investment.
Hotel Africa stands today not just as a building, but as a reminder of dreams, resilience, and the power of heritage.
