Their faces read like maps as expressive as the weathered walls around them. Etched in furrowed physiognomy, their countenance speaks of quiet confidence and inherited wisdom passed through generations.

Here, we see a moment’s respite captured through an unintentional photograph of a man and his wife, perhaps unfolding after a long day of labour. As he softly translated his emotions into the flute’s voice, the woman locked her gaze into the void near him. Her thoughts unspoken, one could almost read the weight carried on her mind, as if it were scribbled on a page with indelible ink.

An amber-hued sunset that paints the whole world gold…

Sometimes we underestimate pictures that have a divine power to make us feel emotions that simply cannot be put into words. How a single picture could make you feel nostalgic or even evoke a sense of longing to be present in a moment that’s long since passed.

The sunsets spent on the East Coast exude a sense of calm and peace that one has to experience to understand. In the stillness of the world that surrounds you, you will find your freedom walking along the soft sandy shores of the Pasikudah beach. And when the world goes quiet, it’s nothing but the water and the beach that stands guard.

This World Oceans Day, we honour the theme “Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet,” a global commitment to safeguard at least 30% of our oceans by 2030. We celebrate the protected waters that provide refuge for marine life, allowing coral reefs to bloom, species to thrive, and the ocean’s rich biodiversity to be preserved for future generations.

Sri Lanka isn’t only seen… It’s heard.
In the crash of restless waves, the hum of crowded markets, the quiet chime of temple bells, and the stillness between it all.

“Some places feed your appetite. Others quietly feed your soul.”

When I was a schoolgirl, I had a bookmark that I treasured dearly. Not just because it carried an adorable Scooby-Doo illustration, but because of the simple words printed across it: “Enjoy the simple things in life.” For reasons I did not fully understand then, those words stayed with me, lingering quietly like an echo through the years.

Today, I realise how true they really are.

Some of our favourite journeys are the ones we never plan, those spontaneous detours, the unhurried escapes, and those “shall we just go?” kind of adventures. And almost always, one of the easiest decisions we make along the way is breakfast: pulling over at a humble roadside spot for a simple local combination that somehow tastes better when enjoyed under open skies and amidst the unpredictability of the road.

It may not be grand or luxurious in the conventional sense, but somehow, it becomes part of the adventure itself, the kind of memory that quietly settles into your heart.

I wanted to share this little piece of from my humble travel diary, not to celebrate extravagance, but as a reminder of the beauty found in life’s quieter moments on this island. Because sometimes, the simplest experiences leave the deepest impressions. They become the most genuine, most authentic encounters, the kind we endlessly seek.

He moves with practised grace, pouring, stirring and tasting. It almost feels like a delicate art form. Pause for a moment, you’ll soon begin to understand how every motion unravels a story, perhaps, passed down through generations, of how to make that perfect countryside cuppa. To be sure, though, he may not draw attention from the world, but he is perfectly happy knowing his regular patrons, who, by all accounts, seem to find it impossible to start the day without a brew made by his own hands.

The steam that curls around his natural constitution carries the sweet scent of earth, rain and resilience. He offers every cup as a ritual of connection, a moment of warmth and hospitality shared, freely and equally, with friends and strangers alike.
