Kalu Diya Pokuna – Mihintale 🇱🇰

Hidden among the ancient ruins of Mihintale, Kalu Diya Pokuna is one of those places that quietly shows us the beauty and history of ancient Sri Lanka.

The name Kalu Diya Pokuna means “Black Water Pond.” Surrounded by rocks, trees and old ruins, the pond has a calm and peaceful atmosphere. It was part of the ancient monastic complex at Mihintale, where monks once lived and practiced Buddhism.

Mihintale is well known for its connection to the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, but places like Kalu Diya Pokuna remind us that there is much more to discover beyond the famous sites.

A peaceful place, an ancient story and another beautiful piece of Sri Lanka’s history. 🌿

Traveling through Sri Lanka isn’t just about golden beaches and ancient temples. it’s also about tasting the island’s bold flavors. One of the most unforgettable? Durian, the famous “king of fruits.”

With its spiky shell and rich, custard-like flesh, durian is a fruit that sparks curiosity and conversation. You’ll find it in local markets across the hill country and beyond, enjoyed fresh or turned into creamy desserts.

Yes, the aroma is strong, but the taste is silky, sweet and unlike anything else. Pair it with a cup of Sri Lankan tea, and you’ve got a story worth sharing.

So when you spot durian on your journey, don’t walk past. Take a bite, embrace the adventure, and let this tropical wonder become part of your Sri Lankan memories.

🐒 The Grey Langur - A Fascinating Monkey of Sri Lanka

While travelling through Sri Lanka’s dry-zone forests, ancient cities and wildlife areas, you may notice a large, long-tailed monkey sitting quietly in a tree or moving gracefully from branch to branch.

This is the Grey Langur, also known as the Tufted Grey Langur (Semnopithecus priam).

With its grey body, dark face, long tail and distinctive tuft of hair on its head, the Grey Langur is easy to recognise. It spends much of its time in trees and feeds mainly on leaves, fruits and other plant material.

For wildlife-loving visitors, seeing a troop of Grey Langurs in the wild can be a memorable part of a Sri Lankan journey. They can be seen in places such as Yala, Wilpattu and other dry-zone habitats, as well as around some historic sites and forest areas.

🌿 A small reminder for visitors:
Please enjoy these beautiful animals from a distance. Do not feed them or try to touch them. Wild animals are best appreciated when they are free to behave naturally.

📸 So, when you are exploring Sri Lanka, remember to look up into the trees. You might just find a Grey Langur quietly watching you!

Sri Lanka - where every journey can bring a wildlife encounter. 🇱🇰🌿

High above the misty valleys of Nuwara Eliya rises Piduruthalagala, the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka at 2,524 meters. Locals call it Mount Pedro, but to travelers it’s simply the place where the sky feels close enough to touch.

The climb takes you through cool forests draped in moss, alive with the songs of rare birds and the fragrance of wild orchids. As the mist rolls in, the mountain transforms into a dreamy landscape, where silence and fresh air wrap around you like a blanket.

Though the summit is protected, the journey itself is the treasure. sweeping views of tea plantations, rolling hills and distant peaks that shimmer in the morning light. Bring a jacket, because the chill at the top is part of the magic.

Just minutes from Nuwara Eliya town, Piduruthalagala is a must for anyone who wants to feel the soul of Sri Lanka’s hill country.

Poson Festival – A Sacred Light in Sri Lanka 🌕

Each year, under the serene glow of the June full moon, Sri Lanka honors Poson Poya, the day Buddhism first graced the island. The story begins at Mihintale, where King Devanampiyatissa, while pursuing a deer, encountered Arahat Mahinda, the messenger of Emperor Ashoka.

To guide the king toward wisdom, Mahinda thero posed a gentle riddle about a mango tree. The king’s thoughtful answers revealed his openness of mind, and so began the first sermon of the Dhamma. From that moment, Sri Lanka’s spiritual path was forever illuminated.

Today, devotees dressed in white gather at Mihintale and Anuradhapura, offering prayers, listening to sermons and sharing meals at countless dansal (alms-giving stalls). Lanterns glow softly in the night, chants rise in harmony and the timeless tale of a king, a deer and a mango tree continues to inspire hearts with peace and compassion.
