Join Attidiya Wetland Cleanup on 27th Sunday at the Bellanwila - Aththidiya Wildlife Sanctuary.

📍The meeting point of the cleanup is Attidiya Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre Entrance (https://goo.gl/maps/miATAJcisVzyTNfY8)

🌳 The Sanctuary covers 3.72 Square Kms and is one of the last remaining protected wetlands in Colombo, the only capital city in the world to be recognised as a Ramsar Wetland City.

🌿 This Wildlife Sanctuary was officially declared as a Protected Area (PA) in July 1990
❗The wetland is threatened by high plastic pollution and illegal land grabbing.
🦜 Animals found in Attidiya Wetland : Sri Lankan Saltwater Crocodile, Fishing Cat, Painted Stork along with another 17 mammals and 166 birds
⚠️ This Wildlife Sanctuary contains fragmented patches of a critically threatened Forest Type classified as “Lowland Tropical Freshwater Swamp Forest”.

We advice volunteers to bring the following items : A reusable water bottle, shoes, Reusable pair of gloves, Face mask, Hand sanitizer, Gunny bags, Sturdy Boots/Wellingtons, Axe/Spade/Grass Cutter, Cap/Hat

Regenerative
Pulp for packaging is made from invasive plant species and agricultural waste, thereby supporting biodiversity. Seeds embedded in the packaging ensure soil and ecosystem regeneration.

Natural & Circular
Materials used in products are all natural and plant based making them 100% compostable. The seeds in embedded in the products ensure a 'Cradle-to-Cradle natural life cycle; preventing pollution.

Ecosystems
Removal of invasive plants control their spread helping to conserve the biodiversity and protect the valuable dry zone ecosystem of Sri Lanka.

Isn't she lovely? While we spend most of our time in the wilds reminding ourselves why we do what we do.. (running a sustainable packaging company ain't rosy!) We also try to soak in the details all around us. And the rosy side of every moment is when we step outside, and take in the details of the micro-exchanges and the complex design; You never know what will inspire your next idea! Worst case you get to breathe in deeply and restart. 💚🍃🌏😊

The Colombo Design Market worked tirelessly to work with Mahindasa in Buttala to custom make these beautiful storage baskets. He wove the baskets by hand and lovingly lined them with cloth upon our request. We imagined putting anything from dry rations to odds and ends in these cloth lined baskets. Message us and we would be delighted to have something custom made for you. 🌿💚

Help Fishing Communities affected by the X-Press Pearl explosion build livelihoods collecting plastic. 🌊💪

"As the X-Press Pearl sinks deeper into our ocean bed, its catastrophic impact continues.

The fishing community already faces great volatility with firsthand encounters of a decimated ecosystem and the rapidly changing climate; this volatility is compounded by a Covid-19 lockdown as procuring goods, transferring money, or even buying basic provisions has been made much harder, only worsened by monsoon flooding of their homes. Devastatingly, it doesn't stop there. The cocktail of chemicals and oil on board the ship seeped into the marine ecosystem devastating marine ecosystems all around Sri Lanka. These hazardous chemicals and nurdles ingested by fish populations means these communities are unable to depend on a livelihood, passed down for generations.

The repercussions of this catastrophe, exacerbates the repercussions of an existing plastic waste crisis and will ripple through our marine ecosystem for decades, even centuries to come.

Since these communities cannot fish, what if they could 'fish' for something else from the oceans and from their surrounding environs that generates a source of income?

THE PROJECT

● 20 Fishermen on the Kepungoda beach (directly opposite the wreck 9.5 nautical miles away) are willing to collect plastic( PET, HDPE and LDPE) for LKR150/KG.
● Recyclers are willing to pay LKR30+/Kg. Recyclers say they cannot increase the price any further because they cannot afford to go up against the price of virgin plastic,. (i.e the nurdles that are wreaking havoc).
● This is insufficient as a livelihood or as a living wage---For plastic collection to serve as a substantial livelihood each fisherman/fisherwoman has to earn at least LKR1500/day. (LKR 37,500/month).
● For this, each individual would have to collect 10KG/day of PET, HDPE,LDPE.
● That is a total collection of 200 KG of plastic per day amongst 20 individuals.
● This crowdfund will subsidize the additional price of LKR120 to help support a viable livelihood by plastic collection per Kilo.
- Every donation will be matched by our funding partners at Tiqri.
● Traceability and transparency of collection and transactions will be via Empower.Eco
● 100% of the crowdfund would be disseminated to each collection point lead by 2 leaders appointed by the group.
