Unmissable Fun: The Traditional Games of Sri Lanka! 🥥

If you are visiting Sri Lanka this April, you are in for a treat! The island is buzzing with the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, and the best way to experience the local spirit is through Avurudu Kreeda—our traditional games.

These games have been played for generations, bringing villages together in laughter and friendly competition. Here are the ones you shouldn't miss:

🏆 The Fan Favorites

📍Kotta Pura (Pillow Fight): Watch (or join!) as two people balance on a slippery log, trying to knock each other off using only one hand and a pillow. It’s much harder than it looks!

📍Kana Mutti Bidhima (Breaking the Pot): A blindfolded player must find and break a hanging clay pot with a stick. The crowd’s directions are usually more confusing than helpful!

📍Lissana Gaha (The Greased Pole): A test of true teamwork and strength. Groups try to climb a tall, heavily greased pole to grab a flag at the top.

📍Banis Kema (Bun Eating): A race to eat a hanging tea bun as fast as possible without using your hands. Great fun for all ages!

📍Aliyata Esa Thabima (Pinning the Eye on the Elephant): A hilarious, blindfolded game where you try to mark the eye on a large drawing of an elephant. Most people end up pinning the tail or the trunk! 🐘🎯

✨ The Rhythm & Spirit
📍The Rabana: Women gathering around this large drum to play rhythmic beats called Sural, announcing the festive spirit to the whole village.

📍The Onchillawa (Swing): Traditional swings tied to tall trees, where locals sing Onchilla Kavi (poems) while swinging high into the breeze.

🌏 Why You Should Join In
Sri Lankans are famous for their hospitality. If you see a celebration happening in a village field, don’t be afraid to stop and watch. Often, visitors are invited to try the games—it’s the most authentic way to connect with the local culture, take amazing photos, and make memories that last a lifetime.

Planning your April trip? Make sure a local festival is on your itinerary!

Ella hits different from up here!

Honestly, no photo can really show how amazing the breeze feels or that view of Ella Rock. If you're planning your Sri Lanka trip, you just have to try the Flying Ravana swing. It’s a bit scary for the first 2 seconds, but after that, it’s just pure peace!
Seriously, you can't leave Ella without doing this.
