Seoul, Korea – Namsan, Dulle-gil Trail. Namsan (south mountain) is the predominate feature of Seoul. Smack right in the middle of this bustling city of 9.5 million, with 360° views. The Namsan Seoul Tower at the top.

My favorite run of all is here and did so many-many times. It’s a paved trail all around the mountain but only did half the run I used to do as I am still not acclimated to the inclines here. The back end of the mountain is quite steep. There is a gondola ride up to the Namsan Tower, a very cool and professional archery range, temple and view all around the city.

Seoul, South Korea - The Story of Admiral Yi Sunshin Museum. This modern museum opened in 2010 underground to the Sejong Cultural Center in Gwanghwamun Square, and just below his famous statue (1968). I was unaware of the museum after all these years in Korea.

Beautifully done, telling the story of one of the most famous heroes in Korean history, specifically during the 16th C Imjin War with Japan. Admiral Yi was most famous for designing Korea’s famous Turtle Ships that turned the tide with Japan’s far superior Navy.

An add on to the museum is dedicated to the other equally famous Korean hero, King Sejong (the Great) who developed and launched the new hangul alphabet in 1443. It replaced the complex Chinese Hanja which was only accessible to the intelligentsia with a language for the common people. King Sejong’s equally famous statue (2009) is also above the museum, on the plaza.

Seoul, Korea – Hangang (River) Run- For many years I did most of my jogging on the Han River which runs right through the center of Seoul. Both sides of the river provide great options. The South side where they built the ’88 highway (for the summer olympics) was first and at that time no one was jogging or biking. I was the only one out there. Now, extreme activity, camping, picnicking, jogging, biking…

The North side of the river was built in conjunction with the new highway, Gangbyeon Expressway (Gangbyeonbuk-ro) in 1997 and is more a bike path then a park. One of many bridges that connect North/South Seoul is the Banpo-daero/Jamsu Bridge. The Jamsu is the lower-level bridge that gets flooded every rainy season and provides a great running path for joggers. They have a water show off the bridge and on the South side are the famous floating islands (cafés, restaurants, conventions…).

Seoul, Korea. Yujin Makguksu, a traditional buckwheat noodle restaurant located right near an apartment complex in that we lived in for a few years. Yujin has been around for a while but still excellent.

Been craving Bosam since we got back to Korea, and they have the best. Tender, boiled pork (typically belly or shoulder) cooked with aromatics like ginger, garlic, and soybean paste, then thinly sliced and served with a mound of ssamjang, raw garlic, and fresh kimchi. Washed down with Korean makgeolli which is the oldest traditional beverage. Fermented rice made milky white and smooth. Perfect!

Seoul, Korea. We moved from Pyeongtaek to Seoul on Friday. Staying on the old US Military base, Yongsan Garrison at the Dragon Hill Lodge (3 weeks). The Dragon remains in operation since it’s opening in 1990.

Excellent hotel, where we were married in a beautiful ceremony/reception and was the center of the US military community in Seoul. Nathan & Kerri spent much time here and the family stayed here every time we came back to Korea from the US. Our favorite fitness club in the world. We were members since 1992 until departing Seoul in 2019.

Ilustrado Restaurant, Intramuros - Located in the historic Walled City of Intramuros, Ilustrado's Hispanic inspired space consists of a Spanish garden courtyard, a casual cafe decked with art and art posters and a neo-classic main dining room that has seen several international heads of state. Considered to be fine dining in an old world design. The restaurant is only 20 years old but the building and surroundings brings you back.

Ermita, Manilla, Philippines – National Museums. These museums are greatly improved from 20 years ago when they were not air conditioned. With that said, this time, many exhibition rooms under construction or closed, maybe headed down in quality.

My favorite museum is a private museum in Makati, the Ayala Museum, but not this time. Short stay in Makati as well as Hyun not able to walk any distance. I went through the Museum of Anthropology and the Fine Arts Museum this time. The National History Museum is best in the group, next time.
