ពាក្យថាអង្គរធំ គឺមានន័យថាជារាជធានី ឬជាទីក្រុងដែលធំ។ រាជធានីនេះបានកសាងឡើង
តាំងពីចុងសតវត្សរ៍ទី៩ ដោយព្រះបាទយសោវរ្ម័នទី១ មានឈ្មោះថា យសោធរបុរ ឬគ្រីយសោធរបុរ តាមសិលាចារិក។ តាមសិលាចារិកសម័យកណ្តាលខ្លះទៀតថាអង្គរធំ គឺហៅថាមហានគរ ឬឥន្ទ្រប្រស្ថបុរី ដែលមានទំរង់អាចយកជាការបាន គឺឥន្រ្ទប្រគ្ថ ឥន្ទីប្រាស់ ឥន្ទិបដ្ថ។រាជធានីនេះលាតសន្ធឹងពីមាត់ស្ទឹងសៀមរាបដែលជាដៃនៃបឹងទន្លេសាប ចំងាយប្រហែល ០,២៥ម៉ាយល៍ពីស្ទឹង។ ទីក្រុងនេះមានផ្លូវចូលចំនួន៥នៅទិសនិមួយៗ៖ ទ្វារខ្មោច (នៅទិសខាងកើត), ទ្វារដីឆ្នាំង (នៅទិសខាងជើង), ទ្វារតាកៅ (នៅទិសខាងលិច), ទ្វារទន្លេអ៊ុំ (នៅទិសខាងត្បូង) និងទ្វារជ័យ (នៅទិសខាងកើតចំពីមុខព្រះបរមរាជវាំងក្នុងខេត្តសៀមរាប)។ គោបរៈនៃទ្វារនិមួយៗមានព្រហ្មមុខបួន។ ទ្វារនៅទិសខាងត្បូងក្រុងអង្គរធំស្ថិតនៅចំងាយ ៧,២គីឡូម៉ែត្រពីខាងជើងក្រុងសៀមរាប និង ១,៧គីឡូម៉ែត្រពីខាងជើងច្រកចូលប្រាសាទអង្គរវត្ត។ កំពែងព័ទ្ធជុំវិញនីមួយៗមានប្រវែង៣គីឡូម៉ែត្របួនជ្រុង និងមានកំពស់៨ម៉ែត្រព័ទ្ធជុំវិញដោយគូទឹក ហ៊ុំព័ទ្ធលើផ្ទៃដី ៩គម២។ កំពែងជុំវិញអង្គរធំគឺតំណាងអោយជញ្ជាំងថ្មជុំវិញផែនដី និងជាជួរភ្នំព័ទ្ធជុំវិញភ្នំព្រះសុមេរុ រីឯគូទឹកព័ទ្ធជុំវិញតំណាងអោយសមុទ្រ។

The city stretches from the banks of the Siem Reap River, a tributary of the Tonle Sap Lake, approximately 0.25 miles from the river itself. Angkor Thom has five gates aligned with the cardinal directions:
Victory Gate (East, near the royal palace),
Gate of the Dead (East),
North Gate (Ta Chhaung),
West Gate (Ta Kao), and
South Gate (Tonle Om).
Each gate is topped with a four-faced Brahma image. The South Gate lies 7.2 km north of Siem Reap city and 1.7 km north of Angkor Wat's entrance.
