Locally called Preah Ko temple due to the three sandstone sculptures of the sacred white bull, Nandi, the mount of lord Shiva, in front of the temple. Preah Ko, in Khmer, means a Sacred Bull. In fact, the original name of this six-tower temple is Sribharameshvara, constructed under the reign of the Khmer king Indravarman I in 879 in the ancient Khmer city of Hariharalaya to be dedicated to the Hindu lord Shiva and his ancestors.

We, the Khmer, sincerely appreciate the Gov't of Hungary, 1994-1996, and the Gov't of Germany, 1999-2003, for their support in restoring this pre-Angkor Wat temple.
