Koh Ker Temple is an ancient archaeological site located in the northeastern part of Cambodia. It served as the capital of the Khmer Empire for a brief period during the 10th century. The site is situated in the dense forests of Preah Vihear Province, about 120 kilometers (75 miles) northeast of the famous Angkor Wat complex.
Koh Ker was established as the capital by King Jayavarman IV, who moved the capital from the previous location at Angkor. The temple complex at Koh Ker features several impressive structures, including Prasat Thom, which is the largest and most significant temple in the area. Prasat Thom is a seven-tiered pyramid temple with a sanctuary on top, and it offers a panoramic view of the surrounding jungle.
The site also includes other noteworthy temples like Prasat Pram, Prasat Krahom, Prasat Neang Khmau, and Prasat Chen. These temples showcase unique architectural styles and intricate carvings, reflecting the artistic and cultural achievements of the Khmer Empire during that period.
Due to its remote location and the challenges of reaching the site, Koh Ker receives fewer visitors compared to the more accessible Angkor Wat complex. However, its relative seclusion adds to its charm, making it a fascinating destination for adventurous travelers and history enthusiasts.
