GPS leap second 2016



At the end of 31 December 2016, an extra second gets added to UTC (Coordinated Universal Time)

That is 1 January 2017, 7AM in Cambodia

Since time is the backbone of GNSS positioning, a leap second can affect your equipment.

In most receivers, the latest leap second is accounted for in the firmware. If you haven't updated the firmware for a long time, you may see effects like:

- lose (RTK fixed) position, receiver reset,

- cannot get a position when using GPS as well as Glonass and Beidou, no Glonass tracking

These effects are temporary; when a full new almanac has been automatically loaded the receiver will return to its normal operation.

What to do?

You can update the firmware in your receiver, where available.

Or,

- Avoid critical survey work on 1 January 2017 on 7:00 AM and allow 15 minutes extra when you start a GPS survey.

After 15 minutes you'll have new almanacs. Do a RESET on the receiver if you can't get a position after 30 minutes.
