BIG conversations happened at the EMAK Roundtable last week and we are still buzzing!

Our Local Assembly & Manufacturing panel, moderated by Kibet, brought industry leaders together to get real about what it takes to build EVs in Kenya.

From EAC regulations and CKD/SKD frameworks to localisation pathways and supplier ecosystem development no topic was off the table. The energy in the room matched the subject matter, and the recommendations that came out of the session are ones we are taking seriously.

Kenya's electric mobility sector is growing and growing fast. Sessions like this make sure the industry's voice is front and centre as the policies that shape our future are written.

What does it really take for a country to build EVs, not just buy them?

That's the question EMAK put to manufacturers, regulators, and industry partners at last week's Q2 Roundtable in Nairobi.

No easy answers came out of it but some clear priorities did. More on that soon.

KAM's Jackson Wambua opened the day with a reality check on where Kenya's e-mobility assembly and manufacturing sector actually stands. A few numbers and shifts that stood out to us:

📜 The EAC Assembling and Manufacturing of Products Regulations, 2025 were gazetted on 1st July 2025 structuring local assembly into 4 progressive levels, from painted/trimmed CKD units (Level 1) all the way to full local body & chassis manufacture (Level 4).

⏳ Plot twist: implementation has just been deferred to 1st July 2027 more runway for assemblers to prepare, but also more uncertainty on timelines.

🔋 On lithium-ion batteries (HS 8507.60.00): Kenya proposed staying the 25% EAC CET rate and applying 0% duty for a year granted. Tanzania and Burundi have gone further, offering full duty remission on lithium-ion batteries used in EV assembly and manufacture.

🏭 Kenya's automotive sector is bigger than most realize 45 auto parts manufacturers, 4 main + 7 independent motor vehicle assemblers, and an e-mobility sub-sector already spanning 40+ players.

This is just the opening slide of the conversation. Next up: what industry players told us about the barriers still standing between Kenya and a true "assembled locally" EV market.
