Kristy Thomson - On Safari "Everything in Africa bites, but the safari bug is worst of all" ~ Brian Jackman

I fell in love with Africa well before I ever had the chance to visit.

IG: In 2016 it became reality. I went on Safari to Kenya with Gamewatchers Safaris, staying in their own small Porini Camps in private conservancies, land leased for eco-tourism from the local Maasai people. I saw first hand the benefits of the private conservancy model; how it is having a positive impact on the natural environment, the wildlife and the local Maasai community. I am now the Australian-based Safari Advisor for Gamewatchers Safaris. I want to help others now create their own ultimate wildlife safari. Check out my very first safari experience: https://mykenyasafari2016.wordpress.com/ and follow this page for the trips that followed...

Experience the real wilderness of Kenya. Tailoring authentic eco-friendly safaris for wildlife enthusiasts. Specialising in small group accompanied tours for conservation-minded citizens wanting to make a difference. There is a Kenya wildlife safari experience for almost any budget! “Don’t bite your brother and keep you hands to yourself”

It looks like absolute chaos, but there’s actually a fair bit of organisation to a lion family dinner.

With a pride of 20, 30 or even 40+ lions feeding together, there’s plenty of pushing, growling and strategically placed paws — but everyone knows their place.

The adults, sub-adults and cubs all jostle for access, with the strongest and most dominant lions generally getting first dibs.

And the winning combo is …🥁 🥁 🥁

Only you can answer that.
Because This Vs That - there are a lot of decisions to make when planning a safari, especially your first one.

My personal This vs That combo?

▪️Guide - of course. And I hope you all choose this one.
▪️Tented Camp - hands down, every time. And the fewer tents in camp, the better.
▪️ Conservancy - absolutely. Although I do like combining with a National Park or Reserve when the occasion arises.
▪️Shared - if budget no issue, I’d definitely choose exclusive use sometimes. But I also genuinely enjoy sharing the experience with other like-minded people. And every now and then, I get lucky with a private vehicle because I’m the only one at camp. 🙌🏼

So there you have it.
My winning combo.

But the beauty of safari is that there really isn’t one right answer.

What’s your This Vs That combo? 👇🏼

UMOJA means unity, togetherness, oneness & solidarity

I don’t think I could imagine a more perfect moment of feeling ‘oneness’, than sitting alone on the grasslands, with a majestic bull elephant contently grazing around me.

No soundtrack. No crowds. Just Umoja. 🐘

✨ Tension at family dinner.

The Sampu Enkare Breakaway Pride brought down a wildebeest, and what looks like chaos is actually a clear social structure at work. Dominant females feed first. Cubs slip in under the protection of their mothers, learning both confidence and boundaries.

The snarling and growling isn’t random aggression — it’s communication. A reminder of rank, spacing and access to food.

In lion society, even a meal reinforces hierarchy.

👅Lions, leopards and cheetahs have sandpaper tongues just like domestic cats.

Those rough little hooks help with grooming, bonding and after dinner clean up.

Hairballs come with the territory too
