HOW CAN OCEAN FREIGHT BE OF BENEFIT TO YOUR BUSINESS?
For anyone transferring cargo internationally, it's well known that ocean freight shipping is an option that offers shippers transportation services at an economical price point. As one of the oldest options for freight transportation, it’s also one of the most available since sea and waterways cover most of our earth. Maritime transport is worldwide by definition, with the shipping industry handling 90 of universal trade.
Importing and exporting items via international maritime shipping provides global maintenance and facilitates dangerous items similar to gas, liquids, and hazards. This shipping solution may be the best choice if your business has to carry large volumes without meeting any kind of pressing deadlines.
Why should a shipper consider ocean transport? Let's check that.
1. Economical: Compared to rail, road, and air, ocean freight rates are more affordable and economically feasible for huge weight. With statistics like this, it's easy to argue that ocean transportation is the cheapest international shipping option.
2. Efficiency: No matter the size of your shipments, ocean freight companies can generally accommodate your needs. ships are the ideal way to move high volumes of weight as they're designed to carry large quantities of goods or raw materials.
3. Low Maintenance Cost: As compared to air and rail transportation, the cost of maintenance for water transportation is significantly lower. This is also one of the primary reasons why the cost of maritime freight is low.
4. Safety: Another advantage of ocean freight shipping is that vessels are built to transport dangerous materials and hazardous cargo safely. The industry is well-advised in handling similar commodities, and laws have been put in place to safeguard the vessel, crew, cargo, and environment’s safety.
5. Eco-friendly: Air and other modes of transportation have way higher carbon traces than marine shipping, which is an environmental drawback. Whereas, on the other hand, vessels are the most carbon-efficient way of transportation.
6. Best for Bulky Goods: The capability of shipping firms to transport large, heavy, or bulky cargo is a revealing advantage of ocean freight shipping.
The ocean has always been the most important mode of transportation for people all across the world. Ocean freight is one of the most popular and nearly exclusively used modes of international transport. If you are interested in using sea freight feel free to contact us for more guidance. ARE DEMURRAGE AND DETENTION COSTS EATING INTO YOUR BUSINESS PROFITS? AVOID THEM BY ENGAGING US AS YOUR FREIGHT FORWARDER!
Demurrage and detention are two words that often confuse people. Is there a difference? In the context of containerized cargo, in generic terms,
Demurrage relates to cargo (while the cargo is in the container)
Detention relates to equipment (while the container is empty after unpacking or before packing)
Let us see how it works.
Imports – A container is discharged off a ship on the 2nd of July – Consignee approaches the shipping line to take delivery of the cargo around the 12th of July. Working off a standard 7 free days from the date of discharge, the line-free days (different from port-free days) expire on the 8th of July. So, the line will charge the consignee DEMURRAGE for 4 days from 9th to 12th July at the rate fixed by the line.
After the full container has been picked up by the client, for example, if they take another 7 days to return the empty container, then it is known as DETENTION which again will be charged at the rate fixed by the line.
So basically before the full container is picked up, Demurrage is charged (after the expiry of free days). After the container has been picked up, till the time the empty is returned to the lines nominated depot, Detention is charged.
Exports: In the case of exports, normally lines give about 5 free days within which the shipper has to pick up the empty, pack it and return it full to the port. In case of delays of more than 5 days, the line charges Detention (generally the same tariff as import detention) for the days that the empty is kept with the client as empty or full.
Once the container is packed and say for example the shipper is unable to ship the same due to any reason, then the Demurrage will be charged at the rate fixed by the line till the full container is shipped out.
What we have mentioned above is the generic and most common form of use of these two terms. There however is a difference in the usage of these terms by various shipping lines in various countries.
Some countries call it combined demurrage/detention in some countries, whereas in some countries it is shown separately. In yet some other countries, the term demurrage seems to be used to denote storage in the port/lines terminal.
The best option would be to check with the shipping line in your country how these terms are defined. As your freight forward our mission is to give you the correct advice and hasten the customs clearance process to ensure to don't incur these charges. KNOW INCOTERMS AND HOW THEY AFFECT COST OF YOUR SHIPMENTS;
When planning for an overseas shipment, importers and exporters must identify how their goods will get from point A to point B. This is done through Incoterms, a standardized set of rules that help facilitate trade between countries.
EXW – Ex Works: The seller’s responsibility is to make the goods available for pickup at the warehouse or factory. From that point forward, the buyer assumes responsibility for all costs and risks. For most importers and exporters, this means working with a freight forwarder that arranges the entire shipment, starting at pickup from the factory.
FCA – Free Carrier: The seller is responsible for delivering the goods to the carrier at a named place, which is usually the terminal or a warehouse. Once the goods are handed over to the carrier, the risk transfers to the buyer.
CPT – Carriage Paid To: The seller is responsible for the costs of transporting the goods to a named destination. Responsibility transfers to the buyer once the goods are delivered to the agreed-upon destination.
CIP – Carriage and Insurance Paid To: This incoterm is the same as CPT except that with CIP, the seller must also arrange and pay for insurance coverage in case of loss or damage to the goods during transit to the agreed-upon destination.
DAP – Delivered at Place: The seller is responsible for arranging the entire shipment up to delivering the goods to a named place. Risk transfers to the buyer upon delivery. The seller is responsible for clearing goods for export but the buyer assumes responsibility for import customs duties, fees, and taxes.
DPU – Delivered at Place Unloaded: The seller is responsible for arranging the shipment and delivering the goods to a named place. They are also responsible for unloading them. Risk transfers to the buyer once the goods are unloaded.
DDP – Delivered Duty Paid: The seller is responsible for the entire shipment, including customs clearance and fees, and delivering the goods to the buyer’s premises. This incoterm places the maximum responsibility on the seller.
FAS – Free Alongside Ship: The seller is responsible for picking up the goods at the factory, clearing them for export, and delivering them to a departure location, usually the ship loading dock. Risk transfers to the buyer when the goods are placed alongside the ship.
FOB – Free On Board: The seller is responsible for packaging, pickup, and delivery of goods onto a vessel at the port of shipment. Liability transfers to the buyer once the goods are on board the vessel
CFR – Cost and Freight: The seller is responsible for transportation to the port of origin and for loading the goods onto the vessel. They are also responsible for transportation to the destination port but they are not liable for that portion of the journey.
CIF – Cost, Insurance, and Freight: Similar to CFR, the seller also arranges and pays for insurance coverage for the goods during transit to the destination port.
