Some journeys are measured in miles. Others are measured in decades.

In this week’s edition, “The Men Who Stayed” tells the story of travel industry pioneers whose careers have spanned more than 30 years — navigating change, overcoming challenges, and helping shape the industry we know today.

As the KATA AGM 2026 draws near, their stories serve as a powerful reminder of this year’s theme: “The Journey: Build to Last.”

Because lasting success is never built overnight. It is earned, one journey at a time.

"If we don't allow other people in, we cannot Build To Last."

Perhaps no quote captured the spirit of the 2026 KATA AGM & Convention better.

Over three days, industry leaders, partners, innovators, and veterans came together to share knowledge, challenge ideas, embrace technology, strengthen partnerships, and prepare for the future.

From AI and leadership to resilience, succession, and collaboration, one message remained constant: the future of travel will be built by those willing to learn from each other and grow together.

Because lasting success is not built in isolation—it is built through people.

The future of the workforce is not about generations—it's about understanding people.

At the 2026 KATA AGM & Convention, strategist and international speaker Juanita Vorster led a thought-provoking session on "The Future Workforce: Managing Gen Z and Preparing for Gen Alpha," exploring how organizations can build adaptable, skilled, and sustainable teams in a rapidly changing world.

Challenging common assumptions about younger generations, Juanita encouraged delegates to move beyond labels and focus on understanding what drives behaviour, creating meaningful workplace experiences, and fostering stronger communication across teams.

Her message was clear: differences between generations will always exist, but successful organizations don't try to eliminate them—they learn how to work with them.

"If we don't allow other people in, we cannot Build To Last."

As the workplace continues to evolve, building future-fit organizations will depend on our ability to embrace diverse perspectives, develop talent, and keep people connected.

One of the most captivating sessions of the 2026 KATA AGM & Convention was the panel discussion "Conversations Under the Mugumo Tree: Still in the Game – Lessons from 30+ Years in Travel that No Strategy Book Can Teach."

Bringing together industry veterans Charles Gikundi ( ), Mohamed Bafagih( ), and Lalit Jobanputra ( .ke) , the session was designed to share real-world experiences, hard-earned insights, and practical lessons from decades in the travel business.

The mood shifted instantly. The audience relaxed, listened, and reflected as the panelists spoke candidly about humble beginnings, major industry crises, resilience, succession planning, leadership, and the importance of trust and relationships in building enduring businesses.

Their collective message was clear: industries may change, technology may evolve, and crises may come and go—but resilience, adaptability, integrity, and people remain the foundations of businesses that truly last.

"The travel industry is about to go through the tsunami of AI."

That was the bold message from Nadaa Ghozzi, WebBeds GSA Tunisia and East Africa, during Day 2 of the 2026 KATA AGM & Convention.

Drawing on insights from over 9.9 million bookings, Nadaa highlighted how artificial intelligence is already transforming the travel ecosystem—improving conversions, enhancing customer experiences, and driving operational efficiency. Every booking made on modern platforms is helping train smarter AI systems, accelerating this transformation even further.

Her message to the industry was clear: AI is no longer a future conversation. It is here, and organizations that fail to embrace it risk being left behind. At the same time, AI presents enormous opportunities for profitability, innovation, and growth, with training and tools becoming increasingly accessible.

In a fitting demonstration of AI's creative potential, Nadaa also generated a special KATA AGM Anthem using AI technology—much to the delight of delegates, who enthusiastically grooved along to the tune.

"AI is at the heart of the journey to Build To Last."

Day 2 of the 2026 KATA AGM & Convention began with a powerful keynote by Dr. Martin Oduor-Otieno on Human-Centred Leadership: Building Enduring Organizations Through People, Purpose and Performance.

His message challenged leaders to look beyond strategy and focus on ex*****on, culture, and people.

"In travel, your product is not a ticket. Your product is an experience—and your team delivers it."

Dr. Oduor-Otieno emphasized that organizations built to last invest in employee wellbeing, growth, and psychological safety, while maintaining a strong culture of accountability and performance. He reminded delegates that customers remember how they are made to feel, and that empowered employees are the foundation of exceptional service.

"People don't buy what you do; they buy how you do it."

A fitting reminder that leadership is not an event, but a marathon requiring courage, empathy, and a commitment to bringing out the best in people.
