A Historic First at the Port of Mombasa — Sustainability Has Officially Arrived

Late Friday, the Port of Mombasa recorded a landmark moment in African maritime history with the maiden call of Höegh Australis — the first pure LNG-powered vessel ever to berth at Kenya’s principal seaport.

After spending her Christmas at sea, racing against Ro-Ro terminal berthing windows, this 16-deck new-generation carrier sailed in from Singapore and was expertly piloted into port by KPA Chief Pilot Capt. Suleiman Bakari, representing the KPA Managing Director, Capt. William Ruto.

In line with maritime tradition, the vessel’s Master, Capt. Edgar Paul P. Buhia, received the official First Call Plaque and Certificate, commemorating this milestone visit.

Why does this matter?

⚓ Höegh Australis operates on 98% Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) — drastically reducing:

• Sulphur oxide emissions

• Nitrogen oxides

• Particulate matter

• Carbon dioxide footprint

With a cargo capacity of 9,000 vehicles, this vessel represents the future of Ro-Ro logistics — combining scale, speed, and sustainability.

Even more impressively, the vessel is ammonia-ready, positioning her for conversion to zero-carbon fuels as global infrastructure evolves.

This historic call is more than a ship arrival — it is a strong signal that Mombasa is now fully capable of handling next-generation green shipping and aligning with IMO decarbonization goals.

🌍 The future of African ports is cleaner, smarter, and here.

Do you believe LNG is the right transition fuel — or should the industry leap directly into zero-carbon alternatives?
