In Europe the number of owner-operator truckers is quite high compared to employed truckers. In South Africa the trend is also heading toward owner-operator truckers however in Kenya we are yet to get there. My research shows that owner-operator trucking industry means safer roads. What do you think, should we encourage truck leasing as opposed to truck ownership?

5 years ago around this time I was hanging on a tiny thread in life, having lost a good job with no specific destination in terms of financial sustenance. On the other hand I enjoyed so much quality time with my young family, with my own body, with my thoughts......Then Kabooooom!!!! Truckers Logistics was conceived for the experience gained and the love of improving Truckers' lives. Thank y'all God, family, friends, colleagues, clients, competitors and suppliers (Truckers).

Today having proper driving skills is no longer a preserve of a few even in the third world countries. However my head is bowed to Truck drivers who cover hundreds if not thousands of miles on end. I celebrate their courage, resilience and expertise in maneuvering tricky and steep terrain. While at it I celebrate those among them who choose life by keeping healthy and protecting their loved ones from unnecessary pain and loss. Visit any of the Northstar Wellness centers for more info.

Safety on our roads depends on much more than highway 'manners'. Its about attitude, truckers' attitude include improving their self-esteem.

I attended the Balozi Training to achieve just that. I sat in with 15 truckers with an average of 15 years experience.

I must applaud NorthStar Foundation for this well thought out curriculum just for truckers; Am gonna share this with you so that we can understand what truckers go through, then we may support safe attitude on our roads.

Objective
The Balozi training curriculum has been designed to provide guidelines for training of truckers in Kenya on matters of health and behaviour change.

The work environment of a truck driver predisposes him/ her to such risks as road accidents, robbery (both at the truck park and on the road), infection of communicable diseases and non communicable diseases.

Specific Training objectives
1. Increase knowledge on prevention of Malaria, HIV, STIs, and TB among truckers.
2. To share experiences on risks and challenges faced by truckers along the transport corridor and explore how to handle them (especially risky s*x and drug and substance abuse).
3. To link the truck drivers to health services along the transport corridor.
4. To identify truckers who can educate their peers on various aspects of health.

Attending Defensive Driving Training at East Africa Heavy Commercial Driving School.

KTA (EAHCV) in partnership with Northstar Alliance will be conducting a nine day drivers’ training at The East Africa Heavy Commercial Driver Development Institute located at Car and General Complex Building, Mbaraki Road on the following days 27th to 30th April and 4th to 8th May, 2015.

A complete training session will run for two (2) day from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The total fees payable is KSH. 3,750 per participant (Please note that this fee has been subsidized/discounted by 50% for the first 100 drivers and the deadline for confirmation should be before or on Friday 24th April, 2015).

The training courses offered are as below;

EAHCVDDI DEFENSIVE DRIVING TRAINING
Theoretical Training
· Introduction to Defensive Driving
· Benefits of Defensive Driving
· Major Causes of Collisions/Crashes and how to prevent them
· Keys to Safety
· driving attitude and behavior
· Emergency cases and how to manage them.
Practical Simulation Defensive Driving
· General Driving
· Predicting Behavior
· Accident Prevention
· Dividing and Focusing Attention
· Assessment and Certification
NORTHSTAR ALLIANCE TRAINING
Standard Topics
Balozi training shall be offered in modular form covering eight sessions of 30 minutes each. Each session will cover specific topical issues. Of particular interest will be HIV, STI, TB and malaria as the basic sessions. The sessions cover the following:
Module / Session 1: Balozi
Module / Session 2: Malaria
Module / Session 3: STIs
Module / Session 4: HIV and AIDs

At the end of each session participants will be;
· Able to identify signs and symptoms of various STIs, HIV, Malaria, TB.
· Know how the diseases are transmitted.
· Know how to avoid infections.
· Learn how to pass information to family, friends and peers.
· Be more willing to seek health services.

NB: Please note that meals will be offered to the trainees for the entire duration of the training
