Then everything changed.

Behind him, his brother-in-law Azai Nagamasa turned against him.

Asakura ahead.
Azai behind.

Nobunaga was trapped.

This was no longer a battle for victory.
It was a desperate fight to survive and return to Kyoto.

Tojinbo, Fukui Prefecture

Japanese suspense dramas often feature a familiar scene.

A criminal, cornered at the edge of a rugged cliff, finally confesses to a detective as the sound of waves crashing below fills the air.

Tojinbo in Fukui Prefecture has appeared in many dramas as the setting for such tense and dramatic moments.

Facing the Sea of Japan, Tojinbo features towering columns of rock and steep cliffs stretching for approximately one kilometer.

Noboribetsu Hell Valley, Hokkaido

White steam rises into the air as hot spring water bursts from the volcanic ground of Noboribetsu Hell Valley.

Its wild and dramatic landscape was once believed to resemble a hell inhabited by demons.

According to a local legend, demons known as Yukijin live in this valley.

The Yukijin were once evil beings who caused suffering to people. However, after angering a deity who protected the northern land, they were given a new duty: to guard the healing hot springs of Noboribetsu.

Since then, they have been seen as protectors of the hot springs, gathering illness, misfortune, and disaster and burning them away.

During the Demon Fireworks performance held at night, the Yukijin beat drums and release powerful showers of flames and sparks, praying for good health and good fortune.

From a landscape that looks like hell, healing hot springs are born.

Tono City, Iwate Prefecture

Tono is a town where many of Japan’s mysterious folk tales have been passed down, including stories of kappa, zashiki-warashi, and mountain gods.

Kappa are water-dwelling creatures widely known throughout Japan. They are usually depicted with green skin, a turtle-like shell, and a dish filled with water on top of their heads.

They are often described as mischievous and even dangerous beings that pull people and animals into the water. At the same time, some stories portray them as polite creatures capable of making promises with humans.

The folklore of Tono became widely known across Japan through The Tales of Tono, a collection published in 1910 by folklorist Kunio Yanagita.

What makes The Tales of Tono unique is that the stories are not presented as simple fantasy. They are set in real mountains, rivers, villages, and homes, and were passed down as events that were believed to have actually happened.

In Tono, nature was seen as not only beautiful, but also as something filled with powers beyond human understanding. People believed that gods and mysterious beings could live in forests, rivers, and even inside old houses.

Today, visitors can still explore places connected to these stories, such as Kappa-buchi Pool and Denshoen Park, where they can learn about local folklore and traditional rural life.

Often overlooked as a tourist destination, Tono is a special place where visitors can experience Japan’s beautiful rural landscape and a mysterious world in which reality and legend seem to overlap.

In 1568, Oda Nobunaga marched into Kyoto with Ashikaga Yoshiaki at his side.
After defeating the Rokkaku clan of southern Ōmi, Nobunaga forced open the road to the capital.
Yoshiaki became sh**un, and for a moment, the Muromachi sh**unate seemed to be restored.

But real power was no longer in the sh**un’s hands.
Kyoto was not ruled by title, but by force.
And the man who held that force was Nobunaga.

Karatsu Castle, Saga Prefecture

Karatsu Castle stands on a hill overlooking the blue sea, crowned by its beautiful white keep.

The castle was built around 400 years ago by Terazawa Hirotaka, a samurai lord who served Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi was one of the most famous samurai leaders in Japanese history and unified Japan in the late 16th century. To support his military campaigns on the Korean Peninsula, he built a massive military base known as Nagoya Castle in Saga.

Terazawa Hirotaka was one of the lords involved in the management of Nagoya Castle in Saga.

After Hideyoshi’s death, the castle was no longer needed. According to local tradition, some of its stones and building materials were reused in the construction of Karatsu Castle.

Terazawa Hirotaka also developed the river, roads, and castle town, laying the foundations of modern-day Karatsu.

From the castle keep, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Karatsu Bay, the city, and Niji no Matsubara, a vast pine forest stretching along the coast.

Beautiful scenery and a history dating back to Japan’s age of samurai—Karatsu Castle offers visitors the chance to experience both.

It is one of Saga Prefecture’s most remarkable historical destinations.
