Kakigori is one of the most famous summer treats in Japan & it has its own emoji 🍧

Usually it is a simple and inexpensive flavored shaved ice dessert, but here it’s next level 👇🏼

Azuki to Kōri brings together two Japanese traditions - azuki red bean paste, which has been prized since ancient times, and kakigori shaved ice. The key ingredient mixed with every flavor is red bean paste so if you’re not a fan, this may not be for you 🫣

Each dessert runs about $18 which is a lot for what it is but, if you’re looking for a unique dessert experience - this will be worth it.

and .japan partnered to create FAMIMA, a newly opened convenience, store next to Azabu Hills about a month ago 🇸🇱 so I want to check it out 🤗

It has exclusive Family Mart merch, the design of the store looks a bit more futuristic, almost like a Uniqlo store. A cool location to grab a few souvenirs. I was a bit bummed. The jean jacket was sold out, but hopefully they come back in stock soon 😅

Nekojita (猫舌) literally translates to “cat tongue” 🐱

A person with nekojita is someone who can’t comfortably eat or drink very hot food or beverages.

The name comes from the belief that cats won’t eat very hot food because their tongues are sensitive to heat. Whether that’s biologically accurate isn’t really the point haha but, the expression has been part of Japanese for centuries.

This is a perfect example of Japanese product design: taking a tiny everyday inconvenience and solving it in an unexpectedly cute way 🥰

Do we need it? No.

Do we want it? Absolutely.

The one time you’ll appreciate jet lag is in Tokyo 🇯🇵🍣

If you wake up at 4 AM on your first morning it means there is only one logical thing to do: head straight to Tsukiji for breakfast 👇🏼

While Tokyo’s famous wholesale fish market officially moved to Toyosu in 2018, the original Tsukiji Outer Market is still very much alive. There is a maze of tiny shops and food stalls selling fresh seafood, tamagoyaki, wagyu, matcha, fruit and just about every Japanese snack you could possibly want.

Many shops open early … some are even open 24 hours. Before the little streets became packed, and started the day with some of the freshest tuna, uni and seafood in the city.

When most people think of Tokyo, they imagine skyscrapers, neon lights, and crowded streets.

But tucked away in quiet neighborhoods like Jiyugaoka, there’s a completely different side of the city that feels very calm.

This small tea house, set inside a former family home, is easy to miss if you don’t know it’s there. From the outside, it looks like a simple wooden house. Step inside, and you’ll find sliding shoji doors, tatami rooms, and a garden that transports you to pre-war Japan.

As is customary, guests remove their shoes at the entrance.

The menu is simple, just a selection of teas, desserts, and local specialties. The experience is about taking your time, being present, and appreciating each sip while overlooking the beautiful garden.
